Out There - Monday, May 28, 2007 [[At breakfast table.]] / Sherry: So how'd it go last night? / John: Oh, pretty good. Of course, Miriam was there too, so I wasn't flying solo. / Sherry: Well, I really wanted to stay and see how you were doing, but I was tired, and I figured you didn't need two mother hens hovering about. / Sherry: John, I'm freaking out about this a little. I'm paranoid and obsessive, so if you have any reservations about working for me let me know. / John: I'm willing to see how it goes, if you are. / [[Both look pensive.]] / Sherry: This would also be a good time to come clean if you're planning on ripping me off or killing me. / John: Okay.
Out There - Monday, May 29, 2007 [[At the breakfast table.]] / John: I understand your concerns, Sherry... I guess I also understand why you didn't hire any bartenders before Miriam and I got here. / Sherry: Actually, I did. But they were all really flaky. So I got rid of them, and resigned myself to waiting until Miriam got here so I could hire someone I TRUST. / [[Miriam enters.]] / Miriam: Good morning. Although I should probably just say "morning", because I sure don't feel "good" at ALL. / Miriam: I didn't even think I was drinking that much last night, but man, I feel AWFUL. Plus, I don't even remember closing the bar! Was I even THERE at closing time? / Sherry: For some reason, the coffee tastes TERRIBLE this morning.
Out There - Wednesday, May 30, 2007 [[At the breakfast table.]] / Sherry: Not that she ever needs a reason, but do you have any idea why Miriam was tying one on last night? / John: I'm not sure... / John: But she did mention that she was going to talk to her mother today, maybe she's a little nervous about that. / Sherry: Yeah, that would do it. Calling her mom means telling her she's moving here permanently, and I'm sure her mom isn't going to be happy about that. / John: Her mom's going to miss her, huh? / Sherry: Yeah, I'm sure she will. / Sherry: Plus now every time she wants to make her feel guilty, it's a long distance phone call. / John: Maybe she can get a frequent caller deal.
Out There - Thursday, May 31, 2007 [[ In Miriam's bedroom, Miriam is talking to her mother on her cellphone. Sherry stands in the doorway. ]] / Sherry: Talking to your mom? / Miriam: Not exactly. / [[ silent panel. ]] / [[ silent panel. ]] / Sherry: Oh, I see. LISTENING to your mom? / [[ Miriam takes the phone from her ear. ]] / Miriam: As far as SHE knows.
Out There - Friday, June 1, 2007 [[Miriam and Sherry are sitting on a bed.]] / Miriam: I love my mom, but I sure could do without her making me feel like I'm a horrible person for moving. / Miriam: And that phone call was *nothing* - just wait 'til we *see* her. She {{period deleted}} can go on for *hours*, you know. / Sherry: Oh, she's not *that* bad. It'll all be over before you know it, and then we'll be on our way. / [[Panel 4: no text. Miriam hands Sherry an open cell phone that has been sitting open on the bed since Panel 1.]] / [[Sherry studies the screen of the cell phone.]] / Sherry: Wait, she's still on the phone? / Miriam: Going on three hours now.

Out There - Saturday, June 2, 2007 Sherry: You know, Miriam, you're under no obligation to subject yourself to your mom's guilt trip. I know it sounds harsh, but maybe you could skip seeing her. / Miriam: What do you mean? / Sherry: Well, Why can't we just fly back, go straight to your storage place, pack up your stuff and go without even dealing with your mom at all? / Miriam: You know, you're right! Quick and dirty! That's a great idea, Sherry! / Miriam: Except, it's not gonna work. All my stuff's at her house. / Sherry: Well, that might make it tougher.
Out There - Monday, June 4, 2007 [[Sherry and Miriam are behind the bar.]] / Miriam: [[on a cell phone]] Really? Oh... well, that's a drag. Well, I'll see you when I get back, then. / Sherry: What's up? / Miriam: [[off the phone]] Nothing... No big deal. Are you ready? / [[John enters scene.]] / Sherry: Yeah, let's get goin'. We might as well get there as early as possible. You know how airports are. / [[Miriam hugs John.]] / Miriam: Bye, John. Try not to blow up the bar while we're gone. / John: I'll do my best. / [[Miriam grabs Sherry by the arm and starts to pull.]] / Sherry: Funny. Guess who I'll blame if his best isn't good enough. / Miriam: I give up - Clayton? Let's *go-o-o*!
Out There - Tuesday, June 5, 2007 [[Miriam and Sherry are seated together on a bus.]] / Miriam: I haven't ridden on public transportation since I bought my first car. / Sherry: I remember that thing. / Miriam: But living here, I almost don't *need* a car; I work downstairs, my boyfriend is within walking distance... / Sherry: So... speaking of Chuck, am I prying too much if I ask you what you were talking to him about this morning? / Miriam: No, of course not. Anyway, you know me, I'd have told you *without* you having to ask. / Miriam: I am, after all, my favorite subject! / Sherry: Yes, we've been over this before.
Out There - Wednesday, June 6, 2007 Miriam: Okay, so here's the deal with Chuck. I called to ask him if he could kip down to the bar to see me off. / Sherry: And? / Miriam: He couldn't. / Sherry: Oh… / Sherry: Why do you seem happy about it? / Miriam: Sherry, don't you get it? / Miriam: I'm happy about it NOW because I was initially unhappy about it. Which means that our relationship has entered the phase of me actually CARING about it! / Miriam: You don't understand, this is a HUGE step for me. / Sherry: I know, I'm trying not to get too choked up.
Out There - THursdayday, June 7, 2007 Sherry: So you're glad that Chuck didn't come to see you off, because it made you sad? / Miriam: Well, yeah, kinda. / Miriam: I called him at the last minute and he didn't drop everything to come see me. Now, whether or not that's because he didn't WANT to or he just COULDN'T is irrelevant. The point is, it MATTERED to me. / Sherry: And this is a major revelation? / Miriam: MAJOR. With anyone else I've dated, I wouldn't have cared one way or another. / Sherry: This sort of explains why you've never had a relationship last more than a week or two. / Miriam: Not since Walter Green in high school. / Miriam: But this PROVES it! I AM capable of caring about people! / Sherry: Once every twelve years or so!

Out There - Friday, June 8, 2007 [[ Miriam and Sherry are in an airport terminal. ]] / Miriam: I want to get a drink at the bar, and I want to have a cigarette before we board. / Sherry: I'm not sure you'll have time to do both. Maybe we should skip the drink, since that's something you can do on the plane. / Miriam: Oh my god, I forgot--I'm not supposed to smoke, am I? / Sherry: Yeah, you knew that, didn't you? / Miriam: You mean you can't even sneak one in the restroom anymore? / Sherry: Miriam, it's not worth the risk. You'll just have to be patient. / Miriam: Oh, this is just STUPID. Those restrooms are BARELY big enough for anything BUT a smoke. / Sherry: ...which no doubt reminds you of ANOTHER story I don't wanna hear.
Out There - Saturday, June 9, 2007 Miriam: You know Sherry, i gotta admit it. My idea of you coming home with me, and John working at the bar--my motivation was mostly selfish. / Sherry: Oh, i know. / Miriam: But it worked out, you get a break from the bar, John gets a new job, and i get someone to help me move. / Sherry: Well, we'll see. Anything can happen. But i am looking forward to doing something different for a few days. And maybe John will be a godsend. / Miriam: Of course he will! Things like this restore my faith you know? I lóve it when this happens! / Sherry: When what happens? / Miriam: When my selfishness ends up working for the good of everybody. / Sherry: If you start a religion, can i be on the softball team?
Out There - Monday, June 11, 2007 Miriam: Would we like a cocktail? Hon, we'd like a conveyor belt of cocktails! Just try and keep up with us! / Sherry: Miriam, she can't really do that. She can probably serve you two or three drinks at the most. / Miriam: Why don't we let her decide what she can do? / Sherry: She doesn't decide, the airline decides. Actually I'm sure federal regulations decide. / Miriam: Well, let's just ask her what kind of a mood those federal regulations are in. / Sherry: Hey, don't let me stop you. / Miriam: Where'd she go?
Out There - Tuesday, June 12, 2007 Miriam: This is going to kill me. I cannot go five hours without a cigarette. / Sherry: Sure you can. / Sherry: You do it every night when you go to sleep. / Miriam: Oh, that helps. I'm awake now. / Sherry: Well, you don't smoke when you go to a movie or when you take a shower, or when you- / Miriam: Okay, okay, enough. Forget it, I quit. / Sherry: Wait, do you mean—? / Miriam: Fooled ya. Are you gonna finish your scotch?
Out There - Wednesday, June 13, 2007 Sherry: Is your mom meeting us at the airport? / Miriam: No, we're going to take a shuttle to the rental place, and then go to her house in the rental van. / Sherry: Well, I'm sure she'll be happy to get all your crap out of her garage. / Miriam: You'd think so. / Miriam: But I'm betting she'll see it as yet another symbolic severing of the umbilical cord. ans another thing to constantly bring up to make me feel bad. / Sherry: Which, if I'm not mistaken, is exactly what makes her happy. / Miriam: Seriously, are you gonna finish your scotch?

Out There - Thursday, June 14, 2007 Miriam: This movie is awful! / Sherry: So don't watch it. Listen to music. / Miriam: The music is awful too! For every song I like I hear three I hate. / Sherry: Read the magazine then. / Miriam: Are you kidding? The magazine if the lamest thing on the whole plane. / Sherry: I don't know what to tell you then. / Sherry: No, you can't go to the restroom and smoke. / Miriam: Recalculating lameness data: magazine second, YOU first.
Out There - Friday, June 15, 2007 Miriam (thinking): Oh, Sherry, my wonderful, beautiful friend, for whom I would do anything in the world… / Miriam (thinking): …I'm so envious of you right now I want to STRANGLE you. Why is this, you ask? Because YOU can sleep, and I can't. / Miriam (thinking): So while I sit here GASPING for a cigarette that you and some stupid international law won't let me have, you slumber blissfully, unencumbered by my pain. / Sherry: You know, it's REALLY hard to sleep with you staring at me and THINKING. / Miriam: It's your fault for looking so cute with your eyes closed.
Out There - Saturday, June 16, 2007 Miriam: What's going on? Was I asleep? / Sherry: Yeah. We're landing now, it woke you up. / Miriam: Did you end up getting any sleep? / Sherry: A little. Not as much as you. / Miriam: I'm sorry, Sherry, I feel really bad. I was probably a grouchy #&%@ for the whole time. / Sherry: Only when you were awake. / Miriam: I hope you weren't too bored when I was sleeping. / Sherry: Naah, I found a way to pass the time. / Sherry: I just kept sneaking off to the restroom until I'd smoked all your cigarettes. / Miriam: Oh, you're as funny as a plane crash, dear.
Out There - Monday, June 18, 2007 Miriam: Good to see you, mom...you look great! / Miriam's mom: So you're really moving away for good, huh? / Miriam: Mom, I have a job and a boyfriend here...why wouldn't I move? / Miriam's mom: You can't get a job and a boyfriend here? / Miriam: That's not the point! I've had all that stuff here, but that was then and this is now and now everything I need is in Portstown. / / Miriam: Oh, except my mama, of course! / Miriam's mom: I think manipulating you emotionally is what I'll miss most.
Out There - Tuesday, June 19, 2007 Miriam's mom: So you've got a moving truck--do you expect the three of us to load all that stuff? / Miriam: Of course not, Mom. / Miriam: I'm gonna call up some guys to do most of the work. You won't have to do anything. Except maybe go buy beer. And order a pizza. / Sherry: You're calling movers? / Miriam: Not professional movers, just some guys I know. / Sherry: I didn't realize you had that much stuff. Is there a lot of heavy stuff? I hope they're willing to handle that. / Miriam: They will. Assuming, of course, that their numbers are still good. / Miriam's mom: With Miriam, if it's not the last minute yet, it's still too early.

Out There - Wednesday, June 20, 2007 Sherry: Miriam, I can't believe this. I flew all the way across the country to help you move, and you didn't think to call anyone to help us untl now? / Miriam: What's the problem? / Sherry: How do you even know if these guys are available? And assuming they are, what make you think they'll drop everything to rush over here to help you? / [[Miriam walks over to the table.]] / [[Miriam puts her foot up on the table, showing off her leg.]] / Sherry [[to Miriam's Mom]]: You must be so proud of her. / Miriam's mom: Who wouldn't be?
Out There - Thursday, June 21, 2007 Miriam: This is Gary, Carlos, and Tom, and this is Sherry. / Carlos: Hi. / Gary: Hi. / Sherry: How's it goin'? / Gary: Hey, I know you...Didn't you used to work at O'Leary's sports bar? / Sherry: Yeah, I did...a long time ago, though. / Gary: Yeah, I knew it was you! You haven't changed a bit! I remember you used to wear that basketball shirt with the really short shorts, man! Totally unforgettable! / Sherry: Funny that you'd remember me and I don't remember you...did we ever talk? I think I woulda remembered if we had any interaction at all... / Gary: Well, you had me thrown out a couple of times. / Sherry: Okay, that narrows it down a little...
Out There - Friday, June 22, 2007 Miriam: I really appreciate you helping me out, Tom. / Tom: No problem, Mir, glad to do it. / Tom: So, how long are you in town for? / Miriam: Just long enough for me to pack up my things and go. / Tom: Well, certainly you have time to hang out for awhile this evening? We could-- / Miriam: I'm sorry, Tom, but I really don't. / [[Pause for one panel.]] / Tom: Then what am I doing here? / Sherry: Helping your friend. / Miriam: Or the girl formerly known as.
Out There - Saturday, June 23, 2007 Miriam: Well, Gary seems to be taken with you... / Sherry: Or with a ten year-old memory of me. / Miriam: You know, we don't have to get on the road right away...If you want to go out with him tonight I wouldn't want to stand in your way. / Sherry: Well, as exciting as sifting through your discards sounds, I think I'll pass tonight. But thanks for thinking of me, I appreciate the recommendation. / [[Sherry takes a swig of something. Miriam rolls her eyes.]] / Miriam: Come to think of it, he was pretty worthless anyway. / Sherry: Oh, well, see now I may have to reconsider.
Out There - Monday, June 25, 2007 Miriam: So that's it, gentlemen--you are released from your service. Thank you very much. / Tom: Aww, I was hoping you might want to hang our some more. / Miriam: I'd love to, but we had kinda planned on hitting the road tonight. / Sherry: Although we really don't have to. / Miriam: Really? I thought you wanted to get back as soon as possible. / Sherry: I do, but what's one night? We can leave in the morning. / Miriam: Well, okay, then! Why don't you guys go home and do whatever you need to do, and give us a chance to pretty ourselves up before we hit the town! Is that a deal? / Gary: Wait, are you suggesting we need showers? / Miriam: It's not a suggestion.

Out There - Tuesday, June 26, 2007 [[Miriam, partly dressed with a towel around her head]] / Miriam: So you do like Gary, huh? Maybe you two will have better chemistry than-- / Sherry: This has nothing to do with Gary. / [[Sherry in the shower]] / Sherry: For the past two years I've been working practically every night. I never go out, I never get to be irresponsible. I just watch other people go out and be irresponsible. / Sherry: I'm not complaining, because I like owning my own bar and working for myself. But I'm on vacation now, sort of, and I wanna have some fun. / Miriam Well, why didn't you say so? Gary and Carlos are nice guys, but if you really want to have some fun, let me see if-- / Sherry: Miriam-- / Sherry: I just want to have a few drinks. I don't want to be you. / Miriam: What's sad is how often I have that exact same thought.
Out There - Wednesday, June 27, 2007 Miriam: Mom, we're going to go out tonight with the guys, and-- / Miriam's Mom: Well, of course you are... / Miriam's Mom: This is so typical of you, Miriam! You're only here for one night, and how do you want to spend it? / Miriam's Mom: Drinking in some bar with a couple of losers! Like it didn't even occur to you to spend the evening with your poor lonely old mother! / [[They stare at each other.]] / Miriam: --we were wondering if you'd like to come with us. / Miriam's Mom: I'd love to, Honey, but I've got a date. Could you zip me up?
Out There - Thursday, June 28, 2007 Tom: So You're moving away to be with a guy? That's not the free-spirited Miriam I know. / Miriam: I know, I know. But people can change, right? / Tom: I'm sure they can, and I guess I'll probably want to settle down someday, but I'm sure not ready for it yet! / Gary: What about you, Sherry? Have you settled down, or are you still having fun? / Sherry: I'm married to my bar. It beats me, but then it tells me it loves me, so I stay with it. Plus, there's the kids to think about. / Miriam: You think being weird is going to make me back off? I went out with Miriam. / Miriam: Not returning his calls for three weeks works, though.
Out There - Friday, June 29, 2007 [[Miriam and Sherry are walking, arms around each other. They seem drunk.]] / Miriam: Well, i had fun. Did you have fun Sherry? / Sherry: Lot's of fun. It's been a long time since i cut loose like that. Tonight I was a crazy party girl like my best friend. / Sherry: Hope your friends weren't too disappointed going home alone. / Miriam: Naah, don't worry about them. / Miriam: I know Carlos wasn't expecting anything. And Gary had to figure out you weren't interested pretty early on. It's not like you were vague about it. / Miriam: Hey, Gary and Sherry—that's funny. You shoulda gone fer it. / Sherry: You're right. Let's call him back.
Out There - Saturday, June 30, 2007 [[Sherry and Miriam are in bed. Sherry is sitting up, and Miriam is sleeping.]] / Sherry: {{thinking}} Woah... I am a little drunk. It's been a while... No wonder I'm feeling that urge again. / Sherry: {{thinking}} I've wanted to do this for the longest time, but I've tried to put it out of my mind... But tonight, I don't think I can contain myself... / Sherry: {{thinking}} Miriam, either you're going to be grateful for this, or you're going to be furious. Maybe you've been wanting for this to happen too, but you just don't realize it yet. / Sherry: {{thinking}} ...Well, we'll both know soon enough... / [[Sherry cuts off a small piece of hair off of Miriam's head.]] / <>
