Out There - Monday, November 19, 2007 [[Wally talking on phone.]] / Wally: Hi, Ms. Murphy? This is Wally Green. / Wally: I hope I didn't catch you at a bad time. I was hoping you could help me get in touch with your daughter. / Wally: Pardon me? Yes, Wally. Or Walter. Walter Green. / [[listens on phone]] / Wally: Yes, little Walter Green from down the street. THAT Walter Green.
Out There - Tuesday, November 20, 2007 [[Chuck's living room. James in chair. Miriam on couch in Chuck's lap, talking into cellphone.]] / Miriam: Hello? / [[Miriam listens to phone, looks startled.]] / Miriam: Hold on a sec, okay? / [[Miriam gets up, addresses Chuck.]] / Miriam: I think I'm gonna go outside and have a cigarette, okay? / Chuck: Okay. / James: Hmmm... ominous. / Chuck: When you're paranoid, EVERYTHING'S ominous. YOU can't get out of BED without tripping over twelve omens.
Out There - Wednesday, November 21, 2007 [[Miriam sitting outside Chuck's door, smoking, talking on cellphone.]] / Miriam: It's your dime, Walter. What do you want? / Miriam: No, I'm working that night. I'm off the night after that. The Bradenton Hotel? / Miriam: No, I don't know where that is. Yeah, if it's in Portstown, I can find it. I dunno, Walter. Maybe I'll be there, maybe I won't. I gotta go now. Yeah. Bye. / [[Miriam looks pensive.]] / [[James standing with one ear resting on door.]] / Chuck: I'm gonna laugh so hard when she opens that door and knocks you on your stupid head. / James: You might be NEEDIN' some laughter soon, dude.
Out There - Thursday, November 22, 2007 [[Miriam walks into Chuck's apartment, arms crossed, looking pensive.]] / [[Chuck pats Miriam, who's now sitting on couch next to him.]] / Chuck: Everything okay, Mir? / Miriam: I dunno. / [[Miriam leans on Chuck's shoulder.]] / Chuck: Wanna talk about it? / Miriam: Not yet. / [[Miriam lays down on Chuck's lap, James looking on.]] / James: How 'bout now? / Miriam: Not YET, James. / Chuck [[to James]]: Don't you have homework or something?
Out There - Friday, November 23, 2007 [[Miriam laying on her bed, Sherry sitting next to her.]] / Sherry: Why would he call you now, after all this time? / Miriam: I dunno. / Sherry: You're not going to go see him, are you? / Miriam: I dunno, I might. / Sherry: Miriam, this sounds like a TERRIBLE idea. A MARRIED professional athlete with whom you used to be INVOLVED calls you and invites you to meet him at his HOTEL... / Sherry: Doesn't that raise like a DOZEN red flags? / Miriam: I'm not meeting him in his ROOM, there's a BAR at the hotel. / [[Sherry walks away.]] / Sherry: I see. No problem then. Make sure you dress like a prostitute. / Miriam: I certainly treasure the trust of my best friend.

Out There - Saturday, November 24, 2007 [[Miriam standing in front of mirror, trying on various outfits -- different one in each panel.]] / Miriam: (No, too cute.) / Miriam: (Too charming.) / Miriam: (Too enticing.) / Miriam: (Too seductive.) / [[Miriam in panties and bra, holding clothing in hand. Sherry stands behind her.]] / Sherry: That's about right.
Out There - Monday, November 26, 2007 [[Miriam tugging at a bustier in front of a mirror.]] / Sherry: Does Chuck know you're going to see Walter? / Miriam: Not exactly. / Sherry: Don't you think you should tell him? / Miriam: It can wait. I'm not even sure I'm going to go yet. / [[Miriam pulls up her jeans.]] / [[Miriam turns & admires herself in the mirror. Sherry rolls her eyes.]] / Sherry: So you're playing dress-up just for ME? / Miriam: Or me. You know how much I like looking at myself.
Out There - Tuesday, November 27, 2007 [[Living room. John laying on couch under blanket, facing back of couch.]] / Miriam: John, are you still awake? / John: Yeah. / Miriam: So Walter called me. He wants me to meet him at some hotel here in Portstown. / Miriam: I think if I'm ever going to get any peace of mind about this thing, I need to go and here what he has to say. / [[Miriam sitting on floor, leaning against couch, looking pensive.]] / Miriam: I'm going to be really annoyed if you've fallen asleep. / John: That'll make ONE of us.
Out There - Wednesday, November 28, 2007 [[Chuck laying down on bed; Miriam sitting on bed next to him.]] / Miriam: So that's what that phone call was... Anyway, I think I should go see him. / Chuck: Okay. / Miriam: You can come with me if you want. / Chuck: Do you want me to? / Miriam: I dunno... I guess it would be kind of awkward. It's just— / Chuck: —I trust you. / Miriam: SHERRY doesn't. / Chuck: Well, SHERRY doesn't know you as well as— / Chuck: Huh. I guess that's not actually true. / Miriam: She's still wrong anyway, right?
Out There - Thursday, November 29, 2007 [[Miriam is lying on a bed, fully clothed]] / Miriam: {{thinking}} The problem with asking Chuck for advice is i know what he's going to say... He'll be supportive, regardless of how he feels about it. / Miriam: {{thinking}} John is going to warn me of the dangers. Sherry will try to make me feel stupid. They're all too predictable to be truly helpful. / [[Miriam sits up on the bed]] / Miriam: {{thinking}} Plus, they all care about me, so they're somewhat biased. I should ask somebody who has a completely different agenda. / [[Miriam is walking down a set of stairs]] / [[Miriam is sitting at the bar next to Clayton]] / Clayton: Flip a coin. Then let's drink our faces off. You're buying.

Out There - Friday, November 30, 2007 [[Miriam at the wheel of car.]] / Miriam: (Bradenton Hotel, this is it.) / Miriam: (Nice hotel. Figures, the big superstar wouldn't stay in a dump.) / Miriam: (What am I doing here? Is Walter gong to hit on me? Is it even POSSIBLE to go to a hotel bar without being hit on?) / [[Man standing at car window.]] / man: Hey, you look sad. Can I buy you a drink and lend a sympathetic ear? / Miriam: I'M NOT EVEN IN THE BAR YET!
Out There - Saturday, December 1, 2007 [[Miriam is sitting at the bar, sipping a drink. Walter walks up to her nonchalantly.]] / [[Panel 1: no text]] / Walter: Miriam? / Miriam: Hello, Walter. / Walter: Miriam, it sure is-- / [[Miriam throws her drink in Walter's face.]] / <> / Walter: [[dripping]] --great to see you. / Miriam: Wow, that was even more satisfying that {{ should read: "than" }} I had imagined it would be.
Out There - Monday, December 3, 2007 [[Miriam and Walter are at the bar. Miriam looks shell-shocked. Walter is wiping his face with a napkin.]] / Miriam: I'm sorry, Walter... I shouldn't have done that. / Walter: I guess this makes us even? / Miriam: Oh, I don't care about getting even... I just-- oh, forget it. / Walter: Why did you come to the game that day, Miriam? / Miriam: I don't even know, Walter. Whatever my reason was, it doesn't matter anymore. {{ should read: "any more" }} / Miriam: Why did you come here to see me? / Walter: I'm not sure, but I think it's to apologize. / Walter: But I'm feeling a little less apologetic now that you've drenched me with gin and tonic. / Miriam: Maybe *I* should apologize. I should have remembered you're a beer man.
Out There - Tuesday, December 4, 2007 Wally: Look, Miriam, what was i going to do? You know Rebecca and i were together--we had to stop after she found out about us! / Miriam: Yeah we had to stop *THAT*--but *THAT* was never the point of our relationship anyway! It was irrelevant to our friendship! / Miriam: You and Rebecca are a much better match than you and i--but you didn't have to totally blow me off! We were best friends Walter! / *Wally stares at Miriam* / Wally: It wasn't that irrelevant was it? / Miriam: Can I borrow your drink for a sec? Mine seems to be empty.
Out There - Wednesday, December 5, 2007 [[Miriam and Wally sitting at hotel bar.]] / Miriam: Funny how you say you came here to apologize and the first thing you do is try to justify what you're supposed to be apologizing for. / Wally: No, you're right, Miriam. I should just apologize. So, I will. I'm sorry. / Miriam: Okay. / [[Bartender brings Miriam another drink.]] / [[Miriam sips on her drink.]] / Wally: I think this is where you say you accept my apology. / Miriam: Really? MY copy of the script says I throw another drink at you.

Out There - Thursday, December 6, 2007 [[ Miriam and Wally are in a bar, meeting again after years. Things are a little tense. ]] / Miriam: Okay, Walter, so you apologize. Fine, I accept. Now what? / Wally: Um, I dunno. What do you mean? / Miriam: Walter, I considered you my best friend. And you stopped talking to me pretty much overnight, just to avoid pissing off your girlfriend. / Miriam: So what now, Walter? Are you my best friend again? Am I supposed to believe you care about me after acting like I didn't exist for twelve years? / Wally: Of course I care about you. That's why I'm here. If I didn't care, you would have never seen me again. / Miriam: I think twelve years is pretty much the statute of limitations on "never seeing you again." / Wally: Sure has been worth the wait, hasn't it?
Out There - Friday, December 7, 2007 [[Miriam and Walter at hotel bar.]] / Miriam: All right, Walter, you win. I forgive you, but only because grudges are for losers. But I think I want to go home now. / Walter: Okay, I understand. If you ever want to talk, you've got my number. / Miriam: Yeah. We'll see. / Miriam: Walter, does Rebecca know you're here? / Walter: Why do you ask? / Miriam: Because ever since you called, I've been worried you were going to come on to me, and now I'm wondering if you're really not as creepy as I thought. / Walter: I'll let you mull that one over on the way home. Good night, Miriam. / Miriam: Good night. If you're NOT creepy, my apologies.
Out There - Saturday, December 8, 2007 [[Walter and his wife (whose name I cannot recall, sorry) are talking in a hotel room. Walter is drenched and dripping from the shoulders up.]] / Wife: So, how'd it go? / Walter: You mean aside from this drink I'm wearing? Pretty bad, actually. / Wife: Well, forgiveness is difficult for some people. At least now your conscience should be clear. / Walter: Yeah... / Wife: Now it's *my* turn. If I'm going to come all the way to Portstown to sit in a hotel room while you meet your ex-girlfriend, I think I'm entitled to some compensation. / Walter: Fair enough, Mrs. Green. What did you have in mind? / Wife: The most expensive seafood restaurant in town, for starters. / Walter: Oh... I was hoping you meant doing something *here*... in the *room*. / Wife: Naaah... when you're looking *this* good, I want to show you off.
Out There - Monday, December 10, 2007 John: You look a little depressed. / Miriam: Yeah, well... / John: Try some of this. / Miriam: Mmmm. Wow, yeah. / Miriam: I assume you know I don't ask you how to make this stuff because I'd rather just have you make it. / John: Yes, we've met before.
Out There - Tuesday, December 11, 2007 [[At the bar.]] / Miriam: Seems like you're settling in pretty well here. / John: Yeah, I think so. / Miriam: Where do you think you'd have ended up if you hadn't met me? / John: I dunno, not far from where I was I guess. / Miriam: Your life wouldn't have been nearly as interesting, I'll bet. / John: Hard to say. / [[Both look thoughtful.]] / Miriam: I guess your life isn't all that interesting NOW, come to think of it. / John: That's okay, I like it that way.

Out There - Wednesday, December 12, 2007 Miriam: Jealousy is so stupid. / John: What brought that on? / Miriam: I was afraid you and Sherry would get together. It took me awhile to realize that it would actually be a GOOD thing. / {{John and Miriam hang both after their thoughts for one panel}} / Miriam: 'cause between you and me, that girl NEEDS it. / John: With your sensitivity, I'm surprised you didn't go into counseling or social work. / Miriam: I DID. I'm a bartender.
Out There - Thursday, December 13, 2007 Miriam: Anyway, you should ask Sherry out... I know she's never going to take the initiative. / *John doesn't respond* / Miriam: Of course, initiative isn't really your strong suit either. Maybe you guys are expecting me to do all the hard work here. / *John doesn't respond* / Miriam: Help me out here, John. What exactly do you want me to do? / John: If i said "go bother someone else," you actually would, wouldn't you?
Out There - Friday, December 14, 2007 [[Sherry on couch reading newspaper. Miriam approaches.]] / Miriam: You and John are hopeless. At the rate YOU'RE both going, neither of you are ever going to find ANYONE. / Sherry: Well, I can't speak for John, but maybe I'll change the rate I'm going when I'm actually INTERESTED in finding someone. / Miriam: Well. Excuse me for caring about either one of you. / Sherry: Okay. / [[Sherry goes back to reading paper; Miriam sitting on couch arm with her arms crossed.]] / Sherry: Hey, aren't you on the clock? / Miriam: Yeah. I decided we needed to have a human resources meeting.
Out There - Saturday, December 15, 2007 Miriam: Oh, hi, mom, what's up? / Miriam's mom: Miriam, hon, I don't know how this slipped my mind, mut you know who called not too long ago? Walter Green, of all people. / Miriam's mom: He wanted your number, so I gave it to him. I hope you don't mind. / Miriam's mom: That was a funny reaction.
Out There - Monday, December 17, 2007 Miriam: ? / Miriam: Hey, check this out. I thought I was putting on weight, but I must have actually lost some. / Miriam: Look how roomy these jeans are. / Sherry: Miriam, those are my jeans. / Miriam: Well, that sucks. Now I feel fat again. / Sherry: Oh, nice. The girl whose jeans you're swimming in feels awful for you.

Out There - Tuesday, December 18, 2007 [[ Miriam and Sherry are sitting on the couch, talking. ]] / Sherry: Our problem is we don't exercise enough. / Miriam: We don't exercise any less than we used to. / Sherry: Yeah, but we're older now. Our metabolism is slowing down. / Miriam: Shouldn't that be "metabolisms"? / Miriam: We don't have one collective metabolism. You have yours and I have mine. / Sherry: Okay, then, "metabolisms." / Sherry: It sounds dumb. / Miriam: Yeah, but I think it's right. / Miriam: I wonder how many calories we burned during that discussion? / Sherry: I dunno, but I'm going to have another sweet roll.
Out There - Wednesday, December 19, 2007 Miriam: You are lucky, actually. Some people can carry a little extra weight and still look good. / Sherry: Well, thanks. But to be honest, I don't really care. People obsess over their weight wat too much. I'm over it. / Sherry: As long as you're healthy, who cares if you're a few pounds over your "ideal" weight? / Mirriam: Only the people who judge you by how good you look. / Sherry: Exactly. / Mirriam: Sherry, THEY'RE the ones who MATTER! / Sherry: Ehh.
Out There - Thursday, December 20, 2007 [[Miriam and Sherry are sitting on a couch, talking]] / Miriam: The greatest curse in being beautiful *isn't* the fact that you never know if people appreciate you for who you are... / Miriam: ... it's the fact that *some* day, that beauty will be gone, and who you are is all you'll have *left*. / [[Miriam grabs Sherry by the shoulders with a panicked look on her face.]] / Miriam: Sherry, we're running out of our days of being beautiful! We need to squeeze everything we can out of them while we can! / [[Panel 4: No text, but Sherry pretends to look thoughtful.]] / Sherry: Count me out. I value my sweats-and-no-makeup time too much. / Miriam: Can't that wait until you develop crowsfeet?
Out There - Friday, December 21, 2007 [[Miriam and Sherry are sitting, talking.]] / Miriam: I'm *really* not looking forward to the day when I have to work hard to look good. / Sherry: Why fight it? / Sherry: Maybe when your looks start to go, it'll be like a weight off your shoulders. / Miriam: I don't think I'll be willing to give up easily. / Sherry: You don't want to be one of those old ladies who wear too much makeup and clothes that are made for younger women, do you? / Miriam: I dunno... maybe. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how fast my looks deteriorate. / Miriam: If I get ugly before you, will you make fun of me? / Sherry: [[smiling to herself]] Only if I'm still talking to you by then.
Out There - Saturday, December 22, 2007 [[ John, Miriam, and Sherry are in their apartment. John's eating a slice of bread. ]] / Miriam: Have you gained any weight since we got here, John? / John: Oh yeah. I've probably put on five pounds or so. Now that I'm doing a lot less walking, it's to be expected. / [[ John looks at Miriam and Sherry. ]] / [[ Miriam and Sherry look at each other. ]] / Miriam: And he's HAPPY about it. / Sherry: Men are ridiculous.
