Out There - Monday, January 28, 2008 [[ Sherry, Miriam, and John are at the bar, talking. ]] / Sherry: Do you think you'll be okay working by yourself tonight? / Miriam: Sure, kiddo, I'm a pro's pro. What's up? / Sherry: I want to take John out to dinner, if he's interested. / John: Sure, sounds great. / Miriam: Heh. That almost sounds like you're going out on a date. / Sherry: Sure does. You can call it that if you want. / [[ Miriam looks at Sherry, John looks at both of them. ]] / [[ Miriam gets really excited, and her dialog balloon takes up most of this panel. ]] / Miriam: Oh my GOD! This is so COOL! But also so WEIRD! I'm so happy for both of you! But what's it going to be like living in the same house? Are things going to be different now? John, be ... off ... touch tonight! Oh my god! This is ... / Sherry: Pizza? / John: Okay.
Out There - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 Miriam: Sherry, you realize that as your best friend, I'm entitled to know everything that happens on your date with john. / Sherry: Okay, then I'll just tell you now, so you won't be in suspense. It's not really a date. We're probably just going to talk. / Sherry: And since the most obvious thing we have in common is we both know you, we'll probably just talk about you all night. / Sherry: Well, time to go! I'm borrowing your stiletto heels, okay?
Out There - Wednesday, January 30, 2008 [[Sherry and John are walking down the street, each wearing warm clothes.]] / Sherry: Part of the reason I'm taking you out to dinner is to thank you for all the work you've done for me. / John: Oh, you're welcome. / Sherry: Another reason is that I now realize that I need to have -some- semblance of a social like outside work. / Sherry: And I also figure we should get to know each other better, since we're living and working together. / John: I'm looking forward to it. / [[They continue walking down the street in silence]] / Sherry: Oh, and I'm acknowledging you're intelligence and perceptiveness by wearing this extremely unsexy outfit. / John: I appreciate that.
Out There - Thursday, January 31, 2008 [[Sherry and John are sitting at a round table, talking.]] / Sherry: Sometimes I fear I come off like a cold fish. I'm just trying to stay focused on running my business. / John: I think people can see that. / Sherry: That's the reason I never go out on dates. Well, that and the fact that the last guy I was interested in had a girlfriend, so I had to forget about him. / Sherry: The only other guy I know that's interested in me is Clayton, and I'm not *that* desperate. / John: Clayton's got some good qualities. / Sherry: Oh my god, *please* don't suggest I go out with him, because - / John: - Oh, I'm not, not if you don't want to. / Sherry: Oh, man, I need a drink of water. I may even need to lay {{ should be 'lie' }} down for awhile {{ should be 'a while' }}. / John: I'll check this off my list of conversation starters.
Out There - Friday, February 1, 2008 [[Sherry and John are sitting at a table, eating pizza. Sherry's drinking a glass of wine.]] / Sherry: So, do you like working at the bar? I know you'd rather be cooking than pouring drinks, but— / John: It's fine. / Sherry: Is there a reason you don't drink? Did you have a problem with it in the past, or— / Sherry: —oops, sorry. Prying into your past, I know you don't like that. / John: No, it's okay. I could drink if I wanted to, I choose not to. / John: You sacrifice some of your social life to keep your business, and I don't drink because I want to keep my focus on other things. / [[Miriam holds up her glass of wine, John holds up a slice of pizza.]] / Miriam: Let's raise a glass to being responsible and boring. Cheers! / John: Can I just raise a slice of pizza?

Out There - Saturday, February 2, 2008 [[Sherry and John are standing in front of a doorway. Sherry is wearing a hat, scarf and a coat. John is wearing a coat.]] / Sherry: Thanks for hanging out tonight. I had a lot of fun. / John: Yeah, me too. Thanks for dinner. / [[Sherry hugs John.]] / Sherry: That wasn't too weird, was it? I mean, it's kind of normal for friends to hug after spending an evening together, right? / John: Sure. / [[Sherry and John hug.]] / Sherry: Well, maybe one more then. I haven't hugged anybody other than Miriam in a long time. / [[Sherry and John are still hugging.]] / John: I kind of like hugging someone whose hair doesn't get in my mouth. / Sherry: I like how yours doesn't taste like cigarettes.
Out There - Monday, February 4, 2008 [[Miriam, John and Sherry in the kitchen, Miriam and Sherry are drinking coffee at the table.]] / [[Miriam is looking at John, who is cooking at the stove.]] / Sherry: You're awfully quiet this morning, Miriam. / Miriam: I know. / [[Miriam is looking at Sherry, while John continues to cook behind them.]] / Miriam: I've been trying to pick up on whether or not you two are exchanging knowing glances. / Sherry: Who, us? We don't know nuthin'.
Out There - Tuesday, February 5, 2008 [[ Miriam, John, and Sherry are in the kitchen. John is cooking, the girls are sitting at the table, Miriam is drinking coffee and wondering about the recent date John had with Sherry. ]] / Miriam: I don't want to be annoying. I know that whatever is going on between you two is your business and yours alone... / Miriam: But you can't fault me for being curious. So try not to judge me too harshly if I occasionally can't stop myself from being nosey. / Miriam: Also I want you both to know that no matter what happens, if you guys are happy about it, I'll be happy too. / [[ John hands Miriam a plate of toast, Sherry smiles at John. ]] / Miriam: So, are you happy, slice of toast? Are you listening, cup of coffee? / Sherry: *I* thought she was talking to the pepper shaker.
Out There - Wednesday, February 6, 2008 [[ Chuck and Miriam are on the couch at Chuck's apartment. They're discussing John and Sherry's recent date. ]] / Chuck: John and Sherry? Yeah, I guess I could see it. / Miriam: I don't even know what's happening, if anything. Sherry's not saying, and John, well, he never divulges even the most TRIVIAL info. / Miriam: So I don't know how I should act around them. If I knew something was going on, I'd stay out of their way. Nobody wants to be a third wheel. / James: (off panel) You got THAT right, Red. / [[ Camera pulls back, we see that James is also sitting on the couch, and that the couch is very crowded. ]] / James: 'Course, nobody wants to sit on the floor in their own house, either.
Out There - Thursday, February 7, 2008 [[ It's winter, and James and Miriam are outside Chuck's apartment. ]] / Miriam: If you want a cigarette, which I know you do, you have to answer a question. / James: Nuthin's free. Shoot. / Miriam: As John and Sherry's friend, I'm going to be really happy for them if they get together... / James: That don't sound like a question, Red. / Miriam: ...why aren't YOU happy that your best friend is with ME? / [[ Silent panel. ]] / Miriam: Well? / James: If you don't like the answer, do I hafta give this back? I've already smoked half of it.

Out There - Friday, February 8, 2008 [[ It's winter. Miriam and James are outside Chuck's apartment, smoking cigarettes. ]] / James: Actually, I got nuthin' 'gainst you, Red. You're a bit of a loon, but that's tol'rable. / James: Only problem, really, is that I was sorta used to the way things WERE, man. An' with you around, things are different. / Miriam: They don't HAVE to be. / Miriam: Y'know, if you want to sit around in your underwear and watch TV, I'm all for it. Do what ya gotta do. / [[ Silent panel. ]] / James: Why is it that it's all right for you to say that to me, but if I said it to you-- / [[ Miriam smiles. ]] / Miriam: —'Cause the world's unfair, but I appreciate that it crossed your mind.
Out There - Saturday, February 9, 2008 [[ It's winter. Miriam and James are on the roof of Chuck's apartment building. Miriam is smoking a cigarette. ]] / Miriam: Sherry was right. She said when it got cold here, it got REALLY cold. And it's really cold. / James: Yep. / Miriam: Guess I won't be sunbathing nude up here for awhile. / James: You were never going to anyway. That was a LIE, man. / Miriam: Well, only the nude part. I actually DID intend to sunbathe. / James: I'll believe it when I see it. / Miriam: Well, you weren't SUPPOSED to see it. That was the whole point, silly. / James: No, the point was you WANTING me to want to see it. / Miriam: I KNOW you wanted to see it. You grinned for a week after I said that. / James: That's 'cause if you're on my ROOF, you're not in my HOUSE.
Out There - Monday, February 11, 2008 [[Meanwhile, at Wally and Rebecca's place, Wally is peering over Rebecca, who is sitting on the couch. He is holding a drink, while she is holding a yearbook.]] / Wally: Is that our high school yearbook? / Rebecca: Yeah, I found it when I was moving stuff around in the basement. / [[Wally has leaned forward, his arms crossed over his elbows and resting his chin almost on his hand.]] / Wally: I don't think I've looked at that thing since graduation. / Rebecca: Yeah, we've been a little busy. / [[Wally's head is up, his arms still crossed. Rebecca has turned from the yearbook to him.]] / Wally: Seems like a long time ago, huh? / Rebecca: It was. / [[They both go back to looking at the yearbook.]] / [[Wally looks a bit surprised and disgusted. Rebecca has turned back to look at him.]] / Wally: Is that ME? Who was cutting my hair then? / Rebecca: You were SOOO lucky I was able to look past that.
Out There - Tuesday, February 12, 2008 [[ Rebecca and Wally are sitting on the couch, looking at an old yearbook. ]] / Rebecca: Some people look at their high school yearbooks and wonder why their lives didn't turn out the way they hoped they would. / Rebecca: We're lucky. Our lives turned out even BETTER than we had hoped. It doesn't seem fair. / Wally: It isn't fair. But we didn't do anything wrong. We don't need to feel guilty because things worked out for us. / [[ Silent panel. ]] / [[ Rebecca gets up. ]] / Wally: Sigh. I'll go get the checkbook. / Rebecca: I'll get our list of charities.
Out There - Wednesday, February 13, 2008 Rebecca: Hey look, there's Miriam. / Wally: Yeah. / Rebecca: I always thought of her as this skinny little tomboy, but she was actually pretty cute. I can see why you liked her. / Rebecca: And I have to admit she grew up nicely. Do you think she looks better now than she did then? / Wally: Yeah. / Rebecca: Hesitating a second or two there woulda been the better move. / Wally: Well, I considered LYING but I figured you'd see right through it.

Out There - Thursday, February 14, 2008 [[ Rebecca and Wally are sitting on the couch, talking. ]] / Rebecca: I just didn't get what you saw in Miriam. I thought she was a little stuck-up. / Wally: That's what she said about you. / Rebecca: Really? But I wasn't—or was I? Maybe a little... wait, WAS I? / Wally: Yeah, you were. But she was too, actually. / Wally: It was high school. You were both good-looking girls. Of course you were a little stuck up. Came with the territory. / [[ Rebecca, annoyed, looks at Wally. ]] / Rebecca: Come to think of it, YOU were kind of arrogant, too. / Wally: Are you kidding? I was the biggest #$#@% in the whole school.
Out There - Friday, February 15, 2008 Wally: I'll bet you and Miriam would have been friends under different circumstances. / Rebecca: Ehhh, I dunno Wally. I found her really annoying in high school. / Rebecca: But she didn't seem that bad when I met her last summer. She was kind of scatter-brained but she seemed a lot nicer." / Rebecca: That's why I was a little surprised when she doused you with her drink. / Wally: I guess she forgave you but didn't forgive me. Go figure. / Rebecca: Well I didn't do anything to her, and you did. Go figure. / Wally: Yeah, Go figure.
Out There - Saturday, February 16, 2008 [[ Rebecca and Wally are in bed discussing things. ]] / Rebecca: I still talk to a lot of those people. But you hardly talk to ANY of YOUR old friends. / Wally: Well, it's kind of hard to relate to them now. And besides, I was never that close to any of them anyway. / Rebecca: Except Miriam. / Wally: Yeah, except Miriam. / Wally: The guys used to hassle me about that. The implication was that if a girl was my best friend, I must be gay. / Rebecca: Heh. Silly boys. / Wally: So it was hard not to laugh when I'd see THEM wrestling in the shower with THEIR best friends. / Rebecca: I'll bet.
Out There - Monday, February 18, 2008 Miriam: Having a boyfriend who works a completely different schedule that you is a lot like having no boyfriend at all. / Miriam: He works days, I work nights. He has weekends off, I work on weekends. / Araceli: How do you manage to spend any time together? / Miriam: The best bet is if I go over there real early in the morning, just before I'm ready to go to sleep and just after he gets up. / Araceli: Well, that doesn't sound too bad. Is he a morning person? / Miriam: Oh, I think you could say that. / Miriam: Too bad I'M not. / Araceli: I'm sure you're doing fine, dear.
Out There - Tuesday, February 19, 2008 Miriam To Araceli in bar: The other thing that sucks is I hardly ever see my best friend, even though I live with her and work with her. / Miriam: Sometimes our schedules overlap a little, but most of the time I'm here alone or with John. / Miriam: Speaking of sherry and John, are you ever in here when they're here together? / Araceli: Yeah, Sometimes. / *Miriam stares silently at Araceli who sips her wine* / Miriam: I'm waiting for you to casually mention any relevant interaction you've witnessed. / Araceli: Sorry, I should have picked up on that.

Out There - Wednesday, February 20, 2008 Araceli: John and Sherry? I haven't noticed anything. But unless people's behavior is really obvious, it tends to slip by me. / Araceli: I guess I'm kind of unobservant. Or maybe I'm just bad at picking up the clues. None of my business anyway, right? / Araceli: I have to admit I had some difficulty figuring out what your relationship was with Sherry. And John, for that matter. / Miriam: Well, I'm not one for secrets. If you're ever curious about me, just ask. I'll usually tell you the truth. / Araceli: "Usually?" / Miriam: I have too many gaps in my memory to do any better than that.
Out There - Thursday, February 21, 2008 First Panel / Miriam, Clayton and Araceli / Miriam: Anyway, I sort of had a thing for John, but I'm over it now. And Sherry had a thing for someone else I know, but i think she's over it. / Second Panel / Miriam and Clayton / Miriam: Clayton here has a thing for Sherry, but Sherry's not interested. I think when all is said and done, Sherry has a thing for being bitter and frustrated / Third Panel / Miriam and Araceli / Miriam: Which makes John a perfect choice for her, because apparently John's thing is not having a thing for anyone. / Fourth Panel / Miriam / Miriam: And of course my thing is having a relationship with someone I can hardly ever see. So we're all pretty much pathetic. / Fifth Panel / Clayton, Miriam and Araceli / Miriam pours a drink. / Clayton: No, pathetic would be if we were all teetotalers, too. / Miriam: Amen. / Araceli: Let us pray.
Out There - Friday, February 22, 2008 [[Miriam is sitting on the bar]] / Miriam: So how about you, Ari? Who or what is the source of your frustration? / Araceli: I'm not frustrated. I have a relatively fulfilling job, and I get paid really well. I'm not seeing anyone, but I'm not sure I'm ready to anyway. / [[Miriam and Clayton stare silently at Araceli]] / Araceli: Okay, fine. If you're going to look at me like I'm from another planet, my job sucks and I'm lonely and frustrated. Happy? / Clayton: I can't fantasize about a woman I can't respect, Araceli. / Miriam: And I think we at least owe him that much.
Out There - Saturday, February 23, 2008 [[Clayton, Miriam and Araceli at the bar.]] / Araceli: I'd like to be seeing someone, but I'm not in any hurry. I don't want to get stuck in a relationship with the wrong person. / [[Araceli and Miriam]] / Miriam: I think I was afraid of that happening to me, so for years I probably went overboard making sure it didn't happen to me. But now I'm glad I did. / [[Clayton and Miriam]] / Miriam: As for you, Clayton. You need to forget about Sherry. She's obviously unable to perceive any of your positive qualities. / [[Clayton, Miriam and Araceli look at each other silently.]] / [[Clayton, Miriam and Araceli]] / Clayton: And those would be ...? / Miriam: I dunno, but I bet I could find one or two if I had to.
Out There - Monday, February 25, 2008 [[ Miriam, Araceli, and Clayton have just left Sherry's bar. ]] / Araceli: You guys are too much fun. It's two o'clock and I don't feel like going home yet. / Miriam: Well, who says the night has to end? Let's go somewhere. I'd offer my place, but it's not fair to Sherry and John. / Araceli: I live clear across town. Where do YOU live, Clayton? / Clayton: Forget it. My place is out of the question. / [[ Miriam drapes one arm over Clayton, makes googly eyes. ]] / Miriam: Oh, c'mon, Clayton, you've got two gorgeous girls, who've been drinking, dying to go to your place, and you're saying no? / [[ Clayton looks offended. Araceli grabs Clayton's arm. ]] / Clayton: Yeah, one of you doesn't like men, and the other one of you is YOU. / Araceli: Well, that settles it then. On to Casa de Clayton!

Out There - Tuesday, February 26, 2008 Clayton: All right, before you come in, you've got to let me go in first and "tidy up" a bit. / Miriam: You're the boss. / Araceli: ...of sorts. / Miriam: Now why would we care how messey his place is? Does he think we're expecting a palace? / Araceli: Maybe there are things he wants to hide from us. / Clayton: Okay, the coast is clear. / Miriam: Holy Cats! This is a worse disaster area than I expected. / Clayton: You insisted on coming here. / Araceli: I didn't realize you were such an avid "reader". / Clayton: You shoulda seen the stuff I hid.
Out There - Wednesday, February 27, 2008 Miriam: Clayton, this is the ultimate in bachelor chic! It's disgusting on an almost disarming level! / Clayton: All right, already, give it a rest. Are we going to talk about my decor or are we going to drink? / Miriam: I thought we'd do both. Fill 'er up. / Miriam: You've made me curious about what you're hiding from us, Clayton... How bad could it be? / Miriam: I'm a pretty open-minded person, you know. And I have a feeling Ari is, too. / Miriam: Plus, the two of you seem to have similar tastes in "art books". / Araceli: I've seen better. What else ya go? / Clayton: Hey, don't lose my place!
Out There - Thursday, February 28, 2008 [[Still at Clayton's appartment, Araceli is sleeping on the couch]] / Miriam: Ari's passed out. Should I call her a cab? / Clayton: Call both of you a cab. I'm going to bed. / Miriam: Maybe we should just crash here. She looks so peaceful, seems a waste to wake her... / Miriam: I think I can trust you not to take advantage of the situation, so I don't mind sharing your bed. / Miriam: And Ari's completely out, so she won't mind either. Of course, if you'd prefer I could sleep on the floor, but I can't believe - / [[Miriam notices Clayton has too passed out on the floor]] / Miriam [[thinking to herself]]: Or YOU could sleep on the floor, and I can do some snoopin'.
Out There - Friday, February 29, 2008 Miriam: Oh, I shouldn't be doing this. Clayton has a right to his privacy. / Miriam: I'll be good. I won't snoop around, I'll just check my e-mail. / Miriam: Hey, what's this...? / Miriam: "A novel by Charles Claxton?" / Miriam: Ok, I'm done being good.
Out There - Saturday, March 1, 2008 [[Reading from Clayton's computer screen]] / Miriam: (I'm stunned...) / Miriam: (This is really, REALLY good. Now, why on earth would Clayton HIDE this from the world?) / Miriam: (Whatever his reason, I should respect it. I won't let on that I read this, even to tell him how GOOD it is.) / Miriam: (What th-- it's NOT FINISHED! How does the stupid thing END?!) / Miriam: CLAYTON, YOU $%#&! WAKE UP!
