Out There - Monday, August 21, 2006 James: You gonna call that woman back today? / Chuck: I was thinkin' about it. / Chuck: But I don't think I will after all. Much as I don't like the idea of her travelin' with a dude, I'm done worryin' about it. / Chuck: If we're gonna have a relationship, it's gonna be based on trust. She trusted me not to overreact, I'm trusting her to be true.' / James: That's a whole lotta trustin', man. You gonna look quite the foo' if she turns out not to be worthy of that trust. / Chuck: Yeah, well, I'll take my chances. I'd rather trust and be wrong than not trust and be wrong. / James: Hey, that reminds me. Can I borrow five bucks? Pay you back Friday. / Chuck: Yeah, right. Like I'm gonna trust you.
Out There - Tuesday, August 22, 2006 Miriam: We're camping! We're one with nature! We've been liberated from the shackles of the evil, civilized world! Isn't this great? / John: Yeah. / Miriam: You want a shot of whiskey? I'm probably not going to drink this whole bottle. / John: Thanks, but I'm good.
Out There - Wednesday, August 23, 2006 Miriam: You think I drink too much don't you? / John: Does it matter what I think? / Miriam: Well yes and no... I'm probably going to do what I want anyway, but I think I'd feel more comfortable if I wasn't worrying that I'm offending you. / John: So what's more important to you... doing what you want, avoiding offending people, feeling comfortable, or taking care of yourself? / Miriam: I dunno... they're all important, I guess... it's just that... well, sometimes I... what I'm trying to say is... / John: Looks like we have a winner.
Out There - Thursday, August 24, 2006 Miriam: What do people do when they're camping? / John: Depends. Some people go hiking, fishing, hunting, stuff like that. / John: Other people don't do much of anything. They just enjoy the beautiful scenery and relax. / [[Both just thinking]] / Miriam: Hmmm. I'll bet there's at least ONE othere thing that they do... / John: Quite right. Sorry. Shall I break open the crackers, the cheese, or both?
Out There - Friday, August 25, 2006 Miriam: ZZZZZZ / Miriam{{off panel}}: ZZZZZZ / Miriam{{off panel}}: ZZZZZZ

Out There - Saturday, August 26, 2006 Miriam: Ahhhh CHOO! / Miriam: Ahhhh CHOO! / Miriam: @#$%! Ah-choo already! I &%$# said ah-choo! / John: Time to get up.
Out There - Monday, August 28, 2006 John: You okay Miriam? / Miriam: Sniff... No, I'm not okay. I'm sick. / John: Do you need to go to a doctor? / Miriam: What I need is my @#&$! bottle of whiskey! Where did I put that @#&$! thing? / John: C'mon, let's go to the store. We'll pick up some juice and cold medicine. / Miriam: Caffeine is what I need. Is there any coffee? Or soda? / John: If you're not feeling better in an hour or so, we'll just get a room. That way you'll get a chance to rest and recuperate before you get any worse. / Miriam: &#$@!, I need a cigarette, where's my lighter? / John: Miriam, do you ever wonder how it is that you're still alive? / Miriam: I dunno, but I'm pretty sure I've entered the punishment phase.
Out There - Tuesday, August 29, 2006 Phone: beep boop bzzzt boop / John: Hi this is Miriam's phone ... Yeah she's here, but she's asleep. She's got a bad cold. Who should I tell her is calling? / John: Oh, hi Chuck, I'm John... Yeah I think she'll be all right if she gets some rest. Sure, I'll have her call you when she's up to it. Okay, bye. / Miriam: Groannn... Who was that on the phone? / John That was a guy who is most eagerly awaiting your arrival. / Miriam: What is he, a mortician? / John: Not sure, we didn't get into small talk.
Out There - Wednesday, August 30, 2006 Miriam: Chuck called? What did you tell him? / John: That you were sick, and that you'd call him back. Here, have some tea. / Miriam: How did he sound? / John: Miriam, I'm not going to try to interpret his mood from a ten-second phone call. Give him a call when you're up to it. / Miriam: Fine. / John: So, are you feeling any better? / Miriam: My throat hurts, my head hurts, my body hurts, my nose is all stuffed up... / Miriam: ... I feel great. Let's make out. / John: Mmm, tempting. Gonna pass though.
Out There - Thursday, August 31, 2006 Clayton: Evening, Sherry. / Sherry: Heya, Clayton. What's the good word? / Sherry: It's just expression, Clayton. It means, "I'm willing to acknowledge you." / Clayton: Excellent. Acknowledge me to the tune of a whiskey straight up.

Out There - Friday, September 1, 2006 [[At Sherry's bar]] / Clayton: What's new with the west coast girl? / Sherry: Miriam? Dunno, haven't heard from her in a couple of days. / Clayton: How do you know her, anyway? / Sherry: When I lived out there we were co-workers. / Sherry: You're gonna like her a lot, Clayton. Very attractive girl... funny, smart, good bartender... / Clayton: Hmmmm... / Clayton: Will she pour me free shots when your back it turned? / Sherry: Clayton, how can you ask me something like that? / Clayton: I dunno... I guess I've always had a little of the crazy dreamer in me. / Sherry: Well, that's okay... There are much worst faults you could have.
Out There - Saturday, September 2, 2006 Miriam: ? / Miriam reads note from John: Miriam - We were out of snacks so I went foraging. Be back soon. John / Miriam thinking: Foraging, huh... I'm afraid to even try to imagine what that entails... I'm so sick of crackers and tea... I suppose a best-case scenario might include bread, or soup, or— / John: Oh, you're up. I couldn't decide on the most appropriate toppings for the pizza, so I just got three different kinds. / Miriam: I think I'm in love. / John: And for YOU, I got some of those crackers that have salt on them!
Out There - Monday, September 4, 2006 Miriam: Sigh... that was so worth the wait. / Miriam: I can't even tell you how much I needed that... I feel SO much better now. / Miriam: I'm almost embarrassed to admit how good that was. Anyway, thank you so much, John... it was FANTASTIC. / John: You know what the best part is? / John: We still have four slices left! / Miriam: They're all yours. I don't believe in overindulging my hedonistic side.
Out There - Tuesday, September 5, 2006 [[Blank panel. Chuck is dialing the phone.]] / Chuck: Yo, John, it's Chuck. Is Miriam there? / [[James has entered the room and is listening to the conversation.]] / Chuck: Oh, okay. Sure, she can call me back when she's out of the shower. / Chuck: So, how is she? / [[James turns to leave the room. Chuck doesn't seem to have noticed him.]] / James: Am I the only one here who thinks that the wrong guy is asking that question? 'Parently so. / Chuck: Good, glad to hear it! That's a load off my mind.
Out There - Wednesday, September 6, 2006 [[In their hotel room, Miriam has just taken a shower and is towel-drying her hair.]] / Miriam: Were you talking to someone on the phone? / John: Chuck called again. / Miriam: Hey, I was thinking about something. / Miriam: First, I wanted to thank you for taking care of me when I was sick. / John: You're welcome. No problem. / Miriam: Second, I appreciate you taking all of my frivolous flirtations and double entendres in the spirit in which they were given, rather than trying to act on them. / John: Again, no problem. / Miriam: ... Because now that I'm feeling better, it's probably just going to get worse. / John: I'll alert my inner demons.

Out There - Thursday, September 7, 2006 Miriam: I'd better call Chuck and make sure he understands the situation. / John: Okay. / Miriam: Hi Chuck! Miriam. I'm just calling to make sure you understand that my friend John here is just a friend. / Miriam: After all, the whole point of this trip is to meet you, right? So the last thing I'd want to do is hook up with someone else before I got there... / Miriam: ... even if I might be really tempted to. / Miriam: I'm not sure I should've said that last part. / John: I'm thinking maybe not.
Out There - Friday, September 8, 2006 Miriam: Chuck, after a year's worth of e-mails, chats, and phone calls, you know me pretty well... / Miriam: You know that I'm really interested in you, and I'm looking for a real committed relationship, not a bunch of frivolous flings. You also know that I don't like being alone. / Miriam: So you can see why I like having John around. He's a good companion, a really nice guy, and he's trustworthy. He's had all this time to make a move on me, and he hasn't made one yet. / Miriam: ... although that may just be due to ineptitude on his part, I'm not sure yet. / John: I don't think you're helping the situation. / Miriam: I know. I wish this phone had an "abort" option.
Out There - Saturday, September 9, 2006 Chuck (over phone): Hey, Miriam, I get it. You and John are just friends and traveling partners. / Chuck (over phone): And if I'm going to enter into a relationship with you, I need to trust you. If I can't trust you, I shouldn't even be considering it. / Chuck (over phone): Anyway, if you were going to have an affair, I don't think you'd be stupid enough to tell me you're traveling with the guy you're having the affair with. / Chuck (over phone): After all, I'd have no way of knowing about it otherwise. / Miriam: Oh... Hey, that's right! Wish I had thought of that! / Chuck (over phone): Um... Okay, that wasn't particularly reassuring, but I'm still giving you the benefit of the doubt.
Out There - Monday, September 11, 2006 Miriam: Feels good to hit the road again. That was a nasty cold. You were a sweetheart for taking care of me. / John: It was no trouble at all. / Miriam: We're gonna make it to Arch City today with no problem. / John: Yeah, we should be there in a few hours. / Miriam: I can't believe it, we're half way across the country already... / Miriam: ... half way to the final destination... / Miriam: On the other hand, we're only about a days drive back to the comforting arms of Los Vicios. / John: If you find a hammerlock comforting.
Out There - Tuesday, September 12, 2006 Miriam: Man, it's flat out here. / John: How quickly can you get the top down on this car? / Miriam: Oh, I dunno... five seconds... ten seconds... why? / John: Have you ever been to this part of the country before? / Miriam: No... why do you ask? / John: Sometimes out here you can run into sudden— / <> KRRR-ACCKK / John: —thunderstorms.

Out There - Wednesday, September 13, 2006 John: So why are you so interested in Arch City? / Miriam: I want to go to a baseball game. / John: You're a Starlings fan? / Miriam: Not really. I know someone who plays for them. Walter Green. / John: Wally Green? You know Wally Green? / Miriam:He was Walter when I knew him. We dated in high school. Sort of. / Miriam: He was a good guy, but you know those high school romances. We had to stop seeing each other because somebody didn't approve of me. I think it was his mom. / John: It's a shame when people pass judgement without having enough of the facts to— / Miriam: —or maybe it was his girlfriend. I just remember SOMEBODY getting their nose out of joint.
Out There - Thursday, September 14, 2006 John: So when was the last time you saw Walter? / Miriam: Probably at our high school graduation. / John: Why the sudden interest in seeing him play baseball? / Miriam: Well, I figure I'm driving across the country anyway, may as well stop in and see him play. / John: Are you going to try and meet him? / Miriam: I don't need to meet him. I already know him. / Miriam: Look, it's no big deal, all right? I'm just gonna go to a baseball game and watch and old friend play. You can come with me if you want, or you can do something else for three hours. / John: All right, I'll come with you. / Miriam: Good, I'm going to need your help hanging up my banner.
Out There - Friday, September 15, 2006 John: So what does the banner say? / Miriam: It says "Do you remember, Walter? —Miriam" / John: Does he remember what? / Miriam: Me, silly. / John: You know they're going to make you take it down as soon as you get it up, don't you? / Miriam: I don't care, as long as it's up long enough for him to see it. / John: What exactly do you expect to accomplish with this? / Miriam: I'm just curious if he remembers me. / John: And how are you going to know if he doesn't? / Miriam: Look, are you going to help me mess with the guy's head or aren't you?
Out There - Saturday, September 16, 2006 Miriam: Do you understand baseball? / John: Sure... / John: This first batter is called the lead-off hitter, his job is to get on base. / Miriam: I see... so ideally he would be a patient hitter who works the count, probably drawing a lot of walks and compiling a good on-base percentage... and of course it wouldn't hurt if he had a little speed, too. / (silent panel) / John: You set me up for that, didn't you? / Miriam: How come those guys only wear those big mittens on one hand?
Out There - Monday, September 18, 2006 [[Walter Green and Ruiz are in there baseball uniform's preparing for the game]] / Ruiz: Hey, Green! Who's Miriam? / Green: Miriam who? / [[Ruiz points towards the stands]] / Ruiz: Isn't that sign for you? / Green: What the- / Green: I knew a Miriam when I was a kid, but I haven't seen her since high school; it could be her, I guess. / [[Ruiz hands Green a business card]] / Green: What's this? / Ruiz: My lawyer's card. Sounds like you're gonna need to call him. / Green: You carry your lawyer's card in your uniform? / Ruiz: Hey man you never know. Heck, I carry my agent's card in my pajamas.

Out There - Tuesday, September 19, 2006 Ruiz: High school flames showin' up a decade later... It's not a good sign, Green. / Green: I don't even know it's her man. / Ruiz: Check it out. Security is tryin' to make her take the sign down. / Ruiz: She ain't cooperatin' now there's some more security headin' down. And some cops. / Ruiz: Looks like she's arguin' with all of 'em. Waste of time, man. You can't win with these people. That sign's comin' down for sure. / Ruiz: I'll be damned. I think she won the argument after all. They're lettin' her keep it up. / Green: It's her.
Out There - Wednesday, September 20, 2006 [[Miriam and John sitting in the stands at a baseball game, waiting for Wally to come up to bat. Miriam is Wearing a baseball cap with an 'S' on it.]] / Miriam: That was nice of them to let me keep my sign up for the rest of the inning. / John: That was an impressive display of eyelash-batting. / Miriam: Now it'll be up when Walter comes to bat. He'll see it for sure. / John: Yeah, lucky him. That way he won't have to concentrate on the game. / Miriam: Oh, it's not a big deal. It was more than ten years ago, and he's a big star now, and I'm just some chick he knew in high school. / Miriam: I guess I'm a little annoyed that he never tried to contact me after graduation. So this is my little attempt at closure. / John: This seems a lot more like re-opening than closing to me. / Miriam: I can't wait to say "Walter Who?" when he calls.
Out There - Thursday, September 21, 2006 [[Walter Green and Teammate Ruiz in the Dugout, after Miriam has unfurled her sign at the baseball game.]] / Ruiz: You knew this Miriam girl in high school, huh? / Walter: Yeah, we were... friends. / Ruiz: Didn't you meet your wife in high school, too? / Walter: Yeah. The knew each other. They weren't exactly friends. / Walter: You know how it is, man. It was high school, and I was the hotshot ballplayer. I was young and they were both interested... So... / Ruiz: Dude, is your wife at today's game? / Ruiz: Sure am glad I ain't goin' home to THAT house tonight.
Out There - Friday, September 22, 2006 [[Out on the Arch City Starlings baseball field, Wally is up at the plate]] / Wally: (Thinking to himself) Great, Rebecca's going to see that sign, and I'm going to catch all kinds of hell. All because of something that happened in high school." / [[Wally swings and misses. The catcher gets the ball. Meanwhile he is still occupied with thinking to himself]] / <> <> / Wally: (Still thinking to himself) Which I took care of then. But that won't keep her from acting like it happened last week. She probably never got over it. Stupid sign... / Wally: (Thinking to himself) Miriam, Miriam, Miriam... You were such a lovely memory... / [[Wally misses and gets what is presumably his third strike. His eyes are squeezed shut and his left hand has come loose from the bat, his face tight with a grimace.]] / <> / [[Wally walks away from the plate, dragging his bat behind him dejectedly. You can see the back of his shirt, he is number 3.]] / Wally: (Thinking to himself) Why can't you just stay that way?
Out There - Saturday, September 23, 2006 Miriam: Okay, the inning is over. I'll keep my promise and take down the sign. / John: Glad to hear it. Let me help you. / Miriam: I'm sorry if this was embarrassing for you, John. I just felt it was something I needed to do. I know it probably doesn't make much sense to you. / Miriam: It's not like I have big regrets about Walter. I'm happy for him. He pursued his dream. And I wouldn't have been content to be the dutiful ballplayer's wife. / Miriam: I know the past is dead, it's just that it would be nice to know if anyone whose life I touched back then remembers me. / Rebecca: Hello, Miriam. / Miriam: AAIIIEEEEE!
