Out There - Monday, September 25, 2006 Rebecca: You're looking well, Miriam. How've you been? / Miriam: Uh... not bad, Rebecca. Yourself? / [[Rebecca clutches her purse to her side. John is now visible but observing quietly.]] / Rebecca: I'm doing great, thanks. So what brings you to our fair city? Don't tell me you live here now? / Miriam: Um, no...I'm on a trip. Thought I'd stop by to see Walter play. I haven't seen him since high school, you know. / [[Rebecca lowers her purse again.]] / Rebecca: Yes, I knew that. / [[Miriam has turned away from addressing Rebecca directly. She looks shocked and has put a hand up to her face. John is no longer visible.]] / Miriam: Oh my... I just realized—you and Walter must be married! / Rebecca: You didn't know that? / Miriam: No, but I should have figured it! You two were made for each other! I'm happy for you, Rebecca, I'm glad to know that after all these years— / Miriam: —Hey, wait a minute. Don't we hate each other? / Rebecca: We did. But now we're into forgiveness. And not making a scene at my husband's office.
Out There - Tuesday, September 26, 2006 Miriam: I feel like an idiot, Rebecca. I should have at least considered that you and Walter might have gotten married. / Rebecca: Think nothing of it, Miriam. / Miriam: Seriously, if I knew you were married I probably wouldn't have come here. Or I at least wouldn't have made the sign. / Rebecca: Well, it's a pretty harmless sign. It could have been worse. / Miriam: The years have been good to you, Rebecca. You're as mellow now as you used to be high-strung. / Rebecca: Well, people grow up, Miriam. So what have you been doing all this time? / Miriam: Oh, this and that. I've been a bartender the last several years. It's a pretty decent living. It's the reason I can afford this trip. So, what do you do, Rebecca? / Rebecca: Um, I'm married to a multi-millionaire. / Miriam: Oh, right. So you do okay, too.
Out There - Wednesday, September 27, 2006 Miriam: By the way, Rebecca, this is John... John, meet Rebecca. / Rebecca: Nice to meet you, John. So where are you two headed? / John: Back east. Portstown. / Mirim: Possible Job opportunity for me. Also, I'm meeting a guy I've sort of been "dating" online. / Rebecca: And where do YOU fit in to all this, John? / John: I don't really. / Miriam: I found John walking along the highway a few days ago. He's been traveling with me ever since. / (Rebecca stares at Miriam) / Miriam: "You haven't changed a bit, have you, Miriam?" / Rebecca: I wasn't going to say anything!
Out There - Thursday, September 28, 2006 [[Rebecca turns to John, who is smiling and concentrating happily on the game.]] / Rebecca: You a big baseball fan, John? / John: Well, I don't keep up on it like I used to but I always enjoy seeing a game. / [[Now Rebecca turns to Miriam.]] / Rebecca: Are you two busy tonight? Maybe the four of us can do something. / Miriam: Oh, I don't know, Rebecca... / [[Miriam now tilts her head into her hand, two fingers pressed into her cheekbone and another curled around her face.]] / Miriam: You've been really sweet, and I'm glad we touched base. Even still, I'm not sure coming here was the greatest idea... I didn't really think it out like I should have. / [[Miriam now has her hand outward, palm open, all fingers spread]] / Miriam: I just wanted to let Walter know that I still think about him, but I was totally selfish about it. I didn't really consider any effect it might have on him. I don't want to cause any disruption in your lives. / [[All three are now concentrating on the game, heads downward. The two women's hats are lowered over their eyes. Miriam's hands are gripping the seat, Rebecca's hands are in her lap, Johns hands are now supporting his lowered head.]] / Miriam: That's the third time he's struck out today, isn't it? / John: Fourth. And that second error was a killer.
Out There - Friday, September 29, 2006 Rebecca: Well, I guess I should get back to my seat now, my friends are probably wondering about me. / Miriam: It was great seeing you, Rebecca. Seriously. / Rebecca: You too, Miriam. Here's my number. If you change your mind about tonight, give me a call. Or call us the next time you're in town. I'm sure Wally would love to see you. / John: Nice meeting you, Rebecca. / Rebecca: Nice to meet YOU, John. Take care of our girl here. / John: Tall order. I'll try. / Miriam: Rebecca, how are you going to tell Walter about our little meeting? / Rebecca: What do you mean? / Miriam: I mean, are you going to let him squirm awhile before you tell him everything's cool? / Rebecca: Oh, you know it. See ya around, girly.

Out There - Saturday, September 30, 2006 [[Miriam and John have left their seats at Arch City Starlings ballpark. Miriam is frowning slightly and John is smiling and turned to talk to her.]] / Miriam: Unbelievable. She was such a sweetheart, and she had every reason to be a monster if she wanted to. / John: Yeah, she was great. / [[Just Miriam is visible and her head is lowered in embarrassment.]] / Miriam: It's so strange, she hated me in high school. And now I show up with some ill-conceived plan to embarrass her husband, and she's so nice to me that I end up being embarrassed. / [[Now Miriam and John are both visible. Miriam's arms are crossed and John is looking ahead, appearing thoughtful.]] / John: Of course, if she had just been nasty to you, you'd be feeling justified and self-righteous, rather than embarrassed and humbled. / [[Miriam and John are strolling away from the stadium, quietly. John has his hands in the pockets of his pants and now he is frowning and looking downward too.]] / Miriam: Wow, she's good. / John: Personally, I just think she's nice, but what do I know?
Out There - Monday, October 2, 2006 [[In Miriam's car: John driving, Miriam slumped down in passenger seat looking pensive.]] / John: You okay, Miriam? / Miriam: I'm fine. I was just thinkin'. / Miriam: You know, about random events. Who knows, maybe if just ONE tiny thing had been different all those years ago, I'D be the one married to the multi-millionaire. / [[Both are silent and pensive.]] / Miriam: I think it was this #@&%! pimple on my cheek. / John: Brutal.
Out There - Tuesday, October 3, 2006 [[Chuck seated, holding phone.]] / Chuck: Hello... oh, hey Miriam! / [[We see James is sitting on couch next to Chuck.]] / Chuck: Naah, I'm not busy... I'm just watchin' TV with my boy James here... / {{Thought bubbles transcribed in parentheses}} / Chuck: Oh yeah? No kiddin'... Yeah, I've heard of him... He's a pretty big star. / James: (Dang—the chick's a GROUPIE, too?) / Chuck: Yeah? Wow... Ha ha! Well, that's cool that she was nice to you... Yeah, you never know, do ya? / James: ("She"?) / James: Adding CHICKS to her list of conquests now? Dude, y'all got a talent for pickin' 'em. / Chuck: Hey, could you hold on a sec? Somebody's BEGGIN' me to kick his ass for him.
Out There - Wednesday, October 4, 2006 Chuck: Look, man, your opinion is noted—and WORTHLESS. You know NOTHIN' about this girl, and I don't wanna here anything more outta you! / James: All right, I know nothin' about her. But dude, how much do YOU know about her? / James: E-mails? Online chats? Phone calls? How much can you learn about someone that way? / Chuck: So what do you want, man? I should hire a detective? Sometimes you just gotta trust people. / James: All I'm sayin' is, keep your eyes wide open, man. Don't get taken in. / Chuck: By the way, where's that five bucks I lent you last week? / James: See what I'm sayin', man? Y'all got a dangerous tendency towards gullibility.
Out There - Thursday, October 5, 2006 Chuck: Look, man, you never know someone until you've spent a lotta time with 'em, right? All I'm sayin' is, I think Miriam's worth the effort. / James: Well, I still think you're too trusting. Do you even have a picture of this woman? / Chuck: Of course, she sent me a whole bunch. Check 'em out. / [[Chuck sits at computer, James looking over his shoulder.]] / James: Da-a-ang, that's really her? / Chuck: Sure. / James: Suddenly a whole lot of things have become very clear to me. / Chuck: I hear ya.

Out There - Friday, October 6, 2006 Chuck: You wanna go to a bar? / James: Dude, twist my arm! / James: Since when do you go to bars? / Chuck: This is the bar Miriam's friend owns. Miriam's probably going to be working there. She suggested I introduce myself. / James: Hey, y'all can grill her about Miriam. A little inside information couldn't hurt, man. / Chuck: That's NOT the reason we're going. / [[Chuck and James walk silently alongside one another.]] / Chuck: Whatever you find out, keep it to yourself. / James: Huh! More likely I'll be SELLIN' it to you than givin' it AWAY.
Out There - Saturday, October 7, 2006 Chuck: Sherry? / Sherry: Yes...? / [[Chuck and Sherry shake hands.]] / Chuck: I'm Chuck. / Sherry: Hi Chuck. / [[Chuck and Sherry stare at one another.]] / Chuck: Uh, Miriam's friend? / Sherry: Oh, CHUCK! Her Internet beau! / Sherry: You're dress a lot more, uh, COMPLETELY than in the pictures I've seen. / Chuck: Splendid.
Out There - Monday, October 9, 2006 Chuck: This is my roommate James. / James: How's it goin'? / Sherry: Nice to meet you. Would you gentlemen care for anything to drink? / James: Sure, we'll take a couple of beers and whatever info you can give us about his chick Miriam. / Chuck: Sorry, did I happen to mention my roommate is an idiot? / James: Hey, I'm tryin' 'a help you out, man! Wanna know the truth about this chick or not? / Sherry: Uhhh... I'm thinking whatever information I have may be best kept to myself. / James: The silence is damning, my man... / Chuck: Do you have bouncers in this joint? Some of your customers can get pretty annoying. / Sherry: Naah, usually I just send my man Clayton over to wax philosophical with the undesirables. Tends to get rid of 'em quickly. / Clayton: You SHOULD be paying me for that service.
Out There - Tuesday, October 10, 2006 Chuck: You've got a nice place here, Sherry. / Sherry: Thanks, Chuck. Actually it's a hole, but I'm working on it. / Sherry: This bar was owned by my uncle for years. It used to cater mostly to sailors, so you can imaging aesthetics weren't always a priority. / James: Depends whatchoo mean by "aesthetics". / Sherry: How's that? / James: I'm gonna assume that in its heyday as a sailor hangout, this place was often frequented by women of, shall we say, ADAPTABLE moral character. / Sherry: That is my understanding. / James: Sounds favorably aesthetic to ME. / Clayton: I like this guy.
Out There - Wednesday, October 11, 2006 Clayton: 'scuse me, I couldn't help overhearing this most scintillating conversation. / Clayton: I was a regular here for years before Sherry took over. And although this may once have been a haven for sailors and prostitutes, that era, sadly enough, ended decades ago. / Clayton: When Sherry inherited this establishment, it was merely home to a few downtrodden souls who would seek temporary solace from a cold, distant, cruel world. / [[Sherry and Chuck look at Clayton, who is leaning head down on the bar.]] / Chuck: And now? / Clayton: They're all dead. They were all pretty old. / Sherry: And he owed all of them money. / James: I like THIS guy.

Out There - Thursday, October 12, 2006 [[Clayton and James shaking hands.]] / Clayton: Clayton. Craig Clayton. / James: 'Sup, man. James. / Sherry: Amazing. Clayton's such an obvious undesirable, most people shrink from him on sight. / Chuck: Most people, maybe, but not my boy James. / Sherry: Clayton's a surly, sarcastic, sexist loser who is actually slightly more annoying when he's NOT trying to be antisocial, which thankfully is rare. / Chuck: James is a paranoid, know-it-all braggart who talks a lotta trash and is able to back very little of it up. / Sherry: Okay, Clayton PAYS me to put up with him. What's YOUR excuse? / Chuck: He kicks in half the rent. Sometimes.
Out There - Friday, October 13, 2006 Chuck: I'll tell you, I AM looking forward to finally seeing Miriam. / Sherry: Well, I think she's pretty excited about seeing you, too. / Chuck: In fact, at this point, I'm even interested in meeting John. / Sherry: Who's John? / Chuck: Oh, some guy she's traveling with. I was a little concerned at first, but I've talked to the guy, he seems cool. / Sherry: Wait, not the guy she... / Sherry: Uh... picked... up... um... / Sherry: I just realized I either know too much or too little to continue this conversation. / Chuck: Wow, wouldn't it be nice to hear THAT admission more often?
Out There - Saturday, October 14, 2006 Sherry: Chuck, I have no idea what's going on with Miriam and this John guy, and it's really not my place to even speculate about it. / Chuck: It's okay, Sherry. / Chuck: Miriam says they're just friends. I have no reason not to believe her. / Sherry: Well, that's very commendable. A lot of guys would be more suspicious... / Sherry: ...especially if they knew her as well as... um... I mean... er... / Sherry: Gosh, closing time already! I swear these evenings just fly by sometimes! / Chuck: It's 8:37.
Out There - Monday, October 16, 2006 Sherry: Ignore my babbling, Chuck. Miriam's my best friend, and here I've been assuming the worst about her. / Chuck: My roommate's been doing that too. Seems I'm the only one willing to trust her. / Sherry: And you SHOULD trust her... She's been going on and on about you for months... Believe me, she can't WAIT to see you. / Sherry: But when I heard her picking that guy up, I just assumed... well, I don't even know WHY I assumed it. / [[Sherry looks thoughtful and worried; Chuck looks stoic.]] / Chuck: Uh, sure you do. I assumed it too. / Sherry: Right... so this would be her fault or ours?
Out There - Tuesday, October 17, 2006 James: Hey man, we could definitely use another pitcher. / Clayton: I believe you have assessed the situation accurately. / James: Feel free to purchase this one, my man. / Clayton: I would, but I think I'd feel FREER if I were to purchase the one AFTER this one. / James: Dude, I was broke when I walked in the door. / Clayton: Well, it appears we have yet another thing in common. / James: Then how did we go through five pitchers? / Clayton: Your roommate bought us one, I finagled one out of Sherry, we talked that moon-eyed couple into buying us one, and we pretty much STOLE one from that table of unobservant fratboy lightweights. / James: Dude, we are KINGS! / Clayton: We are but ambitious peasants. But ambition will carry us far.

Out There - Wednesday, October 18, 2006 Chuck: Well, good night, Sherry, it was good meeting you. / Sherry: Don't be a stranger, Chuck. Think of us for all your imbibing needs. / Chuck: Hey, uh, where's James? / Clayton: Outside, doing what any second-rate lightweight would be doing. / Chuck: You're kidding me! My man couldn't keep up with you? / Clayton: He's young. If he works hard he may develop rudimentary competence. / Chuck: Heh heh! Awright, man, I'll see you around. / Clayton: Later. / [[James on hands and knees facing wall outside bar.]] / Chuck: Lose a contact, James? / James: Y'all are about as funny as what's about to come outta me, man.
Out There - Thursday, October 19, 2006 [[Miriam laying down, talking on telephone.]] / Miriam: Sherry, babeh! To what do I owe the pleasure? / Sherry: I just met chuck. He seems like a really nice guy. / Sherry: He totally trusts you, which made me feel really bad because I assumed you and John had hooked up even though you told me you hadn't. I have no idea why I did that. / Miriam: Oh! Gosh... oh my... um... / Sherry: What? What is it? Are you okay? / Miriam: I jut saw John without a shirt for the first time. Dude is FINE! I'm sorry, what were you saying, Sherry? / Sherry: Uh, that I miss you a lot.
Out There - Friday, October 20, 2006 [[Sherry and Miriam talking on phone.]] / Sherry: Miriam, why DID you pick John up? / Miriam: I dunno... It just happened. You can analyze it to death, but basically, he just looked like he needed a ride. / Miriam: We didn't exactly get along at the beginning, but soon after, something about it felt very, I dunno... comfortable. And safe. And let's face it, Sherry, I hate being alone. / Miriam: And he's sooo nice. He took care of me when I was sick. And he's such a gentleman. He's made nothing that could be construed as a "move" since I met him... / Miriam: ...which, considering how great he's been about everything else, I'm willing to forgive. / Sherry: I was gonna say.
Out There - Saturday, October 21, 2006 [[Miriam lying down in bed, talking on phone to Sherry.]] / Miriam: Actually, Sherry, although John IS pretty attractive, I have my eye on the prize, and the prize is Chuck. / Miriam: Just because I'm attracted to John, it doesn't mean I'm going to act on it. Okay, I sorta flirt with him a little when I'm drinking, but it's pretty insubstantial. / [[Miriam sits up in bed.]] / Miriam: But enough on that. You met Chuck! Tell me, how does the real deal stack up against the pictures? / [[Miriam sitting up, listening intently.]] / [[Miriam raises fist in triumph.]] / Miriam: YES! Life is good! / John: Remember that broken glass in the road? We've got THREE flats.
Out There - Monday, October 23, 2006 [[James looking at computer screen, hand on mouse.]] / [[James looking at computer screen, hand on mouse.]] / [[James looking at computer screen, hand on mouse.]] / [[James looking at computer screen. Chuck walks by and notices what he's doing.]] / Chuck: James, I told you before -- she's wearing clothes in ALL the pictures she's sent. / James: I was, uh... just checkin' some basketball scores, man.

Out There - Tuesday, October 24, 2006 Chuck: So what did you think of Sherry? / James: The bartender? She was all right. Why? / Chuck: I dunno, I was wondering if you'd be interested in hanging out there again... / James: Dude, are you trying to set me up with that chick? / Chuck: No, I was just... / James: Dude, I don't need you for that! I can have any woman I want, any time! Thanks for the thought, bro, but no thanks—I can get my own dates. / [[Silence, both are smiling]] / [[James stops smiling]] / James: Why, do you think she'd go out with me? / Chuck: She puts up with that Clayton guy every night. She might at least agree to one date.
Out There - Wednesday, October 25, 2006 Miriam: So, what made you decide to shave your head? / John: Well, it was summer, and I was going to be outside a lot. / Miriam: So you did it to be cool? / John: Yes. / Miriam: Now that it's growing in, it looks kinda HOT. / John: Yeah, but your card is air-conditioned, so it doesn't really matter. / Miriam: No, I mean, it looks HOT. It looks cool AND hot. / John: Yeah, it hasn't filled in enough to be too hot, so it's still pretty cool. / Miriam: Sigh. Thank God I only hit on you for FUN and not PROFIT. / John: I'll just be glad when it gets past the itchy stage.
Out There - Thursday, October 26, 2006 [[Miriam lights cigarette.]] / John: Do you ever think about quitting? / Miriam: Sure. / Miriam: I think about it every time I run out of cigarettes and have to go to the store, every time I have to go outside to smoke when it's cold or raining, every time I cough... / Miriam: ...every time i wake up with my chest feeling heavy, every tme people tell me my clothes smell like smoke, every time I'm somewhere where I can't smoke, every time someone asks me if I ever think about quitting... / Miriam: Thinking about it doesn't seem to do anything. / John: That would appear to be the case.
Out There - Friday, October 27, 2006 Miriam: Do you ever get tired of eating in cheap roadside diners and fast food joints? / John: I guess, but the price is right. / Miriam: What would you say to dinner in a nice restaurant, with me paying? / John: It sounds great, but I don't want you to pay for me. / Miriam: How about if I insist? / John: Miriam, I can't just have you pay for me every time you want to do something that I can't afford. / Miriam: Why not? I only offer to pay for you if I can afford it. And if you say yes, you get to make me happy AND not hear me whine about it. / Miriam: Frankly, you're not going to get many better deals than THAT in life. / John: I'll have a salad and the gazpacho.
Out There - Saturday, October 28, 2006 [[Miriam and John, in a restaurant.]] / Miriam: John, when we get to Portstown, do you think you'll want to stay there for a while? / John: Yeah, probably. It shouldn't be too hard to get a job there. / Miriam: What about a place to stay? / John: I'll figure something out. Once I'm working, it won't be hard to find a place. / Miriam: Maybe you could stay with me and Sherry for a while. / John: Well, I wouldn't want to impose on her... / Miriam: I'll call her right now and ask her if it's okay. Otherwise, I'm going to worry about it. / John: Why are you worried about it if *I'm* not? / Miriam: Oh, indulge my selflessness, dammit. It's rare enough to be savored.
