Out There - Monday, February 12, 2007 [[Living room. Wally in chair, Rebecca on couch reading.]] / Wally: .226. / Rebecca: What? / Wally: My batting average for the year. .226. / Rebecca: Oh, right. Sorry I asked. / Wally: Worst slump of my career. Guess I'm getting old. / Rebecca: No, you're not. Physically, you're in great shape. / Wally: Yeah. Physically. As if THAT has anything to do with it. / Rebecca: Maybe you'll have a hot streak soon. / Wally: Doubtful. Hot streaks are for the worthy. / Rebecca: Wally, is there something you're not telling me?
Out There - Tuesday, February 13, 2007 [[Wally on chair, Rebecca on couch.]] / Wally: I'm not sure how to say this. / Rebecca: Give it your best shot. / Wally: I keep thinking about Miriam. / Rebecca: Ohh... / [[They sit facing away from each other.]] / Wally: I shouldn't have said anything. / Rebecca: No, I'm glad you did. / Rebecca: Can I keep the house? / Wally: Sure, I -- whoa! WHAT?
Out There - Wednesday, February 14, 2007 Wally: Why did Miriam come to the park that day? / Rebecca: I told you what she said... to let you know she still thinks about you. / Wally: Do you that that was really it? / Rebecca: Seems like it was... I offered her a chance to see you and she turned it down. / [[They are sitting in separate chairs, arms folded and not looking at each other.]] / Wally: You didn't happen to get her number, did you? / Rebecca: No, but I gave her mine. / Wally: Great, now we'll only have to wait ANOTHER eleven years. / [[Rebecca slaps her wrist.]] / Yeah, what WAS I thinking? Bad wife! Bad! Bad!
Out There - Thursday, February 15, 2007 Rebecca: Wally, what's going on? Why are you thinking about Miriam? / Wally: Well, I'm not pining away for her, if that's what you're worried about. / Wally: I think I feel like I've... I dunno... like I've WRONGED her somehow. I guess I feel guilty. I'm not sure I understand it myself. / Rebecca: Well, you SHOULD feel guilty. She was your best friend, and you completely blew her off. She has every reason to hate you. / Wally: Wait a minute! I did that for YOU, remember? / Rebecca: I know. What a doll you are!
Out There - Friday, February 16, 2007 Wally: Rebecca, you're confusing me. Whose side are you on? / Rebecca: I'm ALWAYS on YOUR side, darling. / Rebecca: But being on your side doesn't mean I can't be objective. If I were in Miriam's position, I'd feel betrayed. / Rebecca: I realize I probably pressured you into severing contact with her, but it was wrong of me to do that. You could have done the right thing, instead of trying to appease me. / Wally: So what you're saying is, I shouldn't just do what you want me to do, even though you'll make my life a living hell if I don't? / Rebecca: That's correct. / Wally: Seems a lot more complicated than it ought to be. / Rebecca: Life's not easy, hon. If it was, EVERYBODY would have one.

Out There - Saturday, February 17, 2007 Rebecca: You know what they say, Wally... confession is good for the soul. YOUR problem is that the person you need to confess to isn't around to hear your confession. / Rebecca: My advice to you is to try and put it out of your mind. If you ever get the opportunity to talk to Miriam, you should do it. But in the meantime, torturing yourself over it isn't doing anybody any good. / [[Wally stands up, assumes batting stance.]] / Wally: You're right, Rebecca! I'll just try to forget about Miriam, and my stroke will return! I'll be hitting .300 again in no time! / [[He swings.]] / Rebecca: A little extra batting practice might not hurt, either. / Wally: Sigh... I'm still not getting my hips through, am I?
Out There - Monday, February 19, 2007 [[Miriam and Sherry are drinking coffee.]] / Miriam: You want me to work today? / Sherry: Not as much as I want you to work tonight. / Miriam: Why, do you have a date or something? / Sherry: Yeah, right. No, it's part of my master plan. / Sherry: I want to get you established as my night-time girl. Once the word is out about the fetching new bar-babe, the men in this city should start flocking to the bar in mindless, money-hemorrhaging droves. / Miriam: You're not at all contrite or apprehensice about using your best friend in such a cynical and exploitive manner? / Sherry: I would be, but it's you, Miriam. You eat this stuff up. / Miriram: True enough! Tonight, I commence to seduce a city!
Out There - Tuesday, February 20, 2007 Miriam: Only one problem with me working every night. When will I have time to see Chuck? / Sherry: You don't have to work EVERY night. / Sherry: But could you at least work Friday and Saturday nights and maybe two other nights of your choice? / Miriam: Friday AND Saturday? / Sherry: Miriam, I need you there on weekends. At least until you've established a presence. After than you can start taking a Friday or Saturday night off here or there. / Miriam: Sherry, remember when we used to work together back home? Remember how fun that was? / Sherry: Of course, hon. / Miriam: Well, it was fun because you weren't a soulless slavedriver. / Sherry: I know, but I'll be a FUN soulless slavedriver! I promise!
Out There - Wednesday, February 21, 2007 Miriam: Somehow in my mind I pictured your bar in some thriving urban hotspot. Then I pictured me making an insane amount of tips. / Sherry: Well, I hope I never said anything to give you that impression. I DO think things will pick up eventually. / Sherry: And you never know where the next hotspot will be. There could be some redevelopment project in this area and the next thing you know we're the hippest bar in town. / [[They both sip their coffee pensively.]] / Miriam: In the meantime, we'll be eating a lot of ramen, won't we? / Sherry: Which is how we'll keep our girlish figures.
Out There - Thursday, February 22, 2007 [[Miriam and Sherry at breakfast table; John walks up.]] / Miriam: You're back early. / John: I got a job. I start tomorrow. / Sherry: Wow, that was quick. Where are you working? / John: In a warehouse. It's less that a mile from here. I can walk to it. / John: It doesn't pay a lot, but I don't need a lot. It should be a steady paycheck. I shouldn't have any making ends meet. / [[Miriam looks wistful.]] / Miriam: Are they still hiring? / Sherry: HEY!

Out There - Friday, February 23, 2007 Sherry: Well, I'm off to the coal mine. / Miriam: I might as well go with you. / Sherry: Miriam, I need you to work TONIGHT. I don't need you today. / Miriam: Can't I just go and hang out with you? / Sherry: Well, sure... of course you can. But I don't want you WORKING. / Miriam: What difference does it make? / Sherry: The bar's pretty dead during the day. If you're not working, I don't have to pay you. Get it? / Miriam: I'm so excited about my promising new career move. / Sherry: I know, but try to contain yourself. The older clientele likes their peace and quiet.
Out There - Saturday, February 24, 2007 [[At the bar.]] / Miriam: Do any of your customers ever hit on you? / Sherry: Oh, once in awhile I guess. Why? / Miriam: Just wondering. Do you ever go out with them? / Sherry: Oh, good God, no. / Sherry: When would I go out with them? I'm HERE every night. Besides, I'm focused on BUSINESS right now, not dating. / [[Sherry cleans a glass. Miriam ponders the conversation.]] / Miriam: Let me rephrase the question. Do any of you customers other than CLAYTON ever hit on you? / [[Sherry's drops her head down on the bar.]] / Sherry: I hate my life.
Out There - Monday, February 26, 2007 [[At the bar.]] / Sherry: Not that it's any of my business, but I'm a little curious about the John situation... / Miriam: What about? / Sherry: Well, I'm just wondering why he's HERE. You said he wasn't even planning on coming here, now he's staying in my house, and he's gotten a job... / Miriam: So? / Sherry: I dunno... considering the fact that you're seeing someone else, he's sticking pretty close to you for someone who's not interested... / Miriam: So you think he's interesting in me? / [[They stare at each other.]] / Miriam: I mean, EWWW, you don't think he's interested in me, do you? / Sherry: Oh, VERY convincing. I see a rosy future for you and Chuck.
Out There - Tuesday, February 27, 2007 Miriam: I thought I already explained all this to you, Sherry. Yeah, I like John, and yeah, I'm sort of attracted to him. / Miriam: But none of that makes any difference now! I'm focused on Chuck, and that's that! John isn't a part of the picture at all! / Sherry: Okay, but what about HIS motivation? Why did he follow you all the way to Portstown? Why is he living with us? / Miriam: Aaarrghh, Sherry, ENOUGH! / Miriam: I can't tell you why John does ANYTHING. I don't really understand the guy. But I DO trust him. And if you get to know him, you'll trust him too. / Sherry: I didn't say anything about not trusting him, I just think he might have the hots for you. / [[Miriam excited.]] / Miriam: Do you really think so?
Out There - Wednesday, February 28, 2007 [[Miriam is sipping a drink, her eyes closed as Sherry talks to her.]] / Sherry: Okay, I'm gonna butt out of your personal life because it's none of my business. But I have a right to know a few things about John if he's going to be living in my house. / [[Miriam has stopped drinking and she looks bored.]] / Miriam: Of course you do, Sherry, but good luck. I've spent every day with him for the past few weeks and I hardly know a thing about him. / Miriam: But I trusted him almost immediately. It was weird. It was just an inkling I had that he was okay. Have you ever felt like that? / Sherry: Well, I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, unless it's clear they're unworthy of it. / [[Clayton conveniently appears in between Miriam and Sherry.]] / Clayton: Hi, girls.

Out There - Thursday, March 1, 2007 [[Miriam turns to Clayton, both she and he appear to be holding drinks. Clayton's eyes are rolled upward.]] / Miriam: Hey CLayton, maybe you can help us settle something. Sherry thinks John has the hots for me. What do you think? / Clayton: How the hell would I know? / Miriam: Well, you saw us together for a few hours. Did anything strike you then? / [[Now Sherry is peering in their direction, even though her back is turned to them. Clayton still has his drink in hand.]] / Clayton: Hmm, no, can't say that it did. But something is striking me now. / Miriam: What? What? / Clayton: That no matter how hard I try, I can't force myself to care one way or the other. / [[Miriam looks angry, Sherry looks amused. Clayton has turned to stare at Miriam.]] / Miriam: I'll bet this is the only bar in town where you haven't worn out yourt welcome yet. / Clayton: Actually, I doubt I was EVER welcome here. / Sherry: I can attest to that.
Out There - Friday, March 2, 2007 [[Now Sherry has propped her elbow up on the bar and Clayton is looking in Sherry's direction.]] / Clayton: Sherry, your apparent coldness towards me only serves to inflame my desires. But I don't need to tell you that since it's your whole game anyway. / [[Sherry looks surprised.]] / Sherry: Clayton, as much as I hate to encourage the continuation of this conversation, I feel unfortunately compelled to ask you to explain yourself. / [[Clayton's eyes are rolled skyward. He and Miriam are holding drinks and Miriam is studying him.]] / Clayton: Chicks always act all detached and uninterested when they're hot for a dude. It's a fool-proff signal that they're interested. / [[Sherry looks angry, Clayton and Miriam look surprised.]] / Sherry: Clayton, you DO realize that's a bunch of crap, don't you? / Clayton: No, I'm pretty sure it's accurate. I see it all the time on some of the more respectable reality TV shows. / [[Miriam is sipping her drink.]] / Sherry: I see. And what makes these the "respectable" reality TV shows? / Clayton: Very little full frontal nudity.
Out There - Saturday, March 3, 2007 [[Miriam leans toward Clayton, who looks bored.]] / Miriam: John got a job in a warehouse today, Clayton. I wonder if it's the same one you work at. / Clayton: There are a lot of warehouses around here. / [[Miriam's drink is half finished on the bar. Clayton is still holding his. There is a bowl of pretzels in the corner.]] / Miriam: Do you work the nightshift or something? / Clayton: Nope. / Miriam: Then what are you doing here in the middle of the day? / Clayton: Lunch break. / [[Miriam has her arms crossed over her elbows that are propped on the bar and she has turned away from Clayton to stare ahead blankly. Sherry is standing over them with her arms crossed and an equally blank stare. Clayton happily is drinking his drink and the pretzels remain in the bowl in the corner.]] / [[Miriam is holding out the bowl of pretzels, turned toward Clayton.]] / Miriam: Some pretzels with your whiskey? / Clayton: No thanks, a heavy lunch makes me worthless at work. / [[Sherry is smirking.]]
Out There - Monday, March 5, 2007 Sherry: I'm outta here. Ready for sentry duty? / Miriam: I was born ready. So what are your plans for tonight? / Sherry: I dunno. Maybe I'll see if John wants to have dinner. I should probably get to know him since he lives with me. / Miriam: You're gonna ask John out on a date? / Sherry: No, I'm gonna see if he wants to have dinner. / Miriam: Sounds like you're gonna ask him out on a date. / Sherry: Sounds more like I'm going to see if he wants to have dinner. / Miriam: You probably want me to knock first before I come in tonight, don't you? / Sherry: Only if you're uncomfortable catching us in the act of eating chow mein.
Out There - Tuesday, March 6, 2007 [[At the bar]] / Miriam: Thanks for coming to see me tonight, Chuck. / Chuck: No need to thank me. I WANT to see you. / Miriam: So you don't mind that I have to work most nights? / Chuck: How can I mind? You've got to make a living, Miriam. / Miriam: Not necessarily. If you get a fat raise, I can quit my job and just be your love slave. / [[Miriam looks seductive.]] / Miriam: Okay, that probably sounded a little creepy considering we haven't even been on a date yet, huh? / Chuck: Totally. But I'm captivated by your creepiness.

Out There - Wednesday, March 7, 2007 [[Sherry's living room: Sherry and John eating Chinese food.]] / Sherry: John, I hope you don't mind me asking this, but what exactly are you doing here? / John: What do you mean? / Sherry: I just find it a little curious. Are you here because of Miriam? / John: Yeah, you could say that. / Sherry: You like her, huh? / John: Sure I like her. But not in the way you're thinking. / John: Miriam seemed like she could use some help. I like helping people. It's kind of what I DO, basically. / Sherry: You get more than your share of incredulous stares, don't you? / John: I'm not sure what my share is, but I get more than I need.
Out There - Thursday, March 8, 2007 Sherry: Why did you leave wherever it was you were living? / John: It was time. / John: I set out to find new people to help. I set out to find a place where I could do some GOOD. / Sherry: Which you're accomplishing by working in a warehouse? / John: A person need not be defined by their occupation, Sherry. / John: What you do to make your living can be a large part of who you are, or a very small part. Either way, you can do good things AWAY from your job as well as AT your job. / Sherry: You're talking to someone whose life consists of pouring drinks and sleeping. / John: This is EXCELLENT chow mein, isn't it?
Out There - Friday, March 9, 2007 Sherry: John, I'll admit you SEEM like a good guy. But you also seem too good to be true. / Sherry: And I'm slightly overwhelmed by the prospect of both you AND Miriam living with me. I was prepared for Miriam, but you were kinda sprung on me at the last minute, you know? / John: Well, I understand your concerns, Sherry. I don't want to make you uncomfortable. I can find another place to stay. / Miriam: No, don't do that. I may be cynical, but I'm not heartless. Miriam says you're okay. So let's just see how it goes for awhile, okay? / John: Okay. / John: Oh, I'd like to pay you rent, too. Is $200 a month okay? / Sherry: My home is your home. Please stay as long as you'd like.
Out There - Saturday, March 10, 2007 [[At the bar. Miriam opposite Chuck, Clayton a bit farther down the bar.]] / Miriam: You should probably be getting home soon, huh? / Chuck: Yeah, probably. Unless you'd like me to stay. / Miriam: Well, yeah, of course I'd like you to stay. But I know you have to work tomorrow. I understand if you want to go. / Chuck: I don't WANT to go. But I SHOULD go. Still, I'll stay if you WANT me to. But I SHOULD go. / Miriam: You can stay if you really WANT to stay. But don't stay just because I want you to stay. You should only stay if you REALLY don't want to go. / Clayton: Is there anything I can do to get BOTH of you to go?
Out There - Monday, March 12, 2007 [[Miriam and Clayton at the bar.]] / Miriam: So, what if Sherry and John end up together? That would be kind of weird, huh? / Miriam: If anything, I should be happy for them, but for some reason I'm not. I don't know if it's jealousy or what, but for some reason I don't like it. / Miriam: It makes no sense for me to be jealous -- I'm all into Chuck right now, and John is... I dunno... and of course it would be great if Sherry found someone... / Miriam: Maybe I'm bent because he never responded to any of my advances; but on the other hand he knew i was really interested in Chuck the whole time, and it was basically just non-serious flirting... Still... / Miriam: What do YOU think, Clayton? / Clayton: (If she didn't pour such generous shots, I'd be SO outta here...)

Out There - Tuesday, March 13, 2007 [[Miriam and Clayton at the bar.]] / Miriam: Actually, it would be great if Sherry and John hit it off. Sherry's my best friend. I'd love to see her happy with someone. / Miriam: And John deserves to be happy too. But it's going to be weird. Especially with all of us living under one roof. / Miriam: Well, enough of that. I've got other things to worry about. Such as trying to survive on the tips I get here. Why is it so dead in here, Clayton? / Clayton: Well, you WERE supposed to close two hours ago. / Miriam: Oh my God! It's FOUR O'CLOCK! Why didn't you tell me? / Clayton: Sorry. You're so interesting to listen to, I didn't want it to end. / Miriam: I know, but STILL!
Out There - Wednesday, March 14, 2007 [[Miriam at Sherry's door.]] / Miriam: (Jealousy is such a stupid emotion.) / Miriam: (Why should I care if John and Sherry get together? I'm with Chuck. And I'm with Chuck because I WANT to be with Chuck.) / Miriam: (Not that we're really together in any OFFICIAL sense. We haven't even been on a DATE yet. And we haven't even DONE anything except KISS.) / Miriam: (What if I open this door and they're like MAKING OUT or something? Or if they're SLEEPING together? I know I shouldn't care, but am I ready to just WALK IN on it?) / Miriam: (Only the undisputed CHAMPION of stupid emotions could make you stare at a door at four in the morning.)
Out There - Thursday, March 15, 2007 [[Sherry's apartment. John lying down on the couch; Miriam enters.]] / Miriam: Hi John! Sorry, did I wake you? / John: Yeah, it's okay. / Miriam: Where's Sherry? / John: I dunno, in her room? Where else would she be? / Miriam: Did you guys have a good time at dinner? / John: Yeah, but I gotta get back to sleep now, Miriam. / [[Miriam leaning over back of couch staring at John.]] / Miriam: But, how good a time did you have? / John: A better time than I'm having right now. Can I go to sleep?
Out There - Friday, March 16, 2007 [[Sherry's apartment. Sherry drinking coffee. Miriam looks half awake.]] / Sherry: It's about time you're up. I was going to wake you but let you sleep because I want you to work for me today. / Sherry: I'm working on a schedule for us... something that will hopefully give you enough hours to survive without killing me financially. / Sherry: Plus, if we have a schedule, it will be easier to plan everything else, like household chores, for instance, or your evenings with Chuck. / Sherry: Speaking of which, you're off tonight; maybe you should call him and see if you two can get together. / Miriam: Are you going to be picking out my clothes and making my lunches for me too? / Sherry: Naah, you'll be fine. You kids grow up so fast these days.
Out There - Saturday, March 17, 2007 {{Strip in green and white.}} / [[Sherry's table.]] / Miriam: So, did you have fun last night? What do you think of John? / Sherry: Well, he seems like a good guy, just like you said. I'm not sure I buy his walking-the-earth-and-spreading-goodwill act, but I'm glad you brought him, because I think I'm going to like having him here. / Miriam: I knew it. You like him, don't you? Well, why wouldn't you? He's a really nice guy. Well, I'm happy for you, Sherry, even if I don't seem like it. / [[Sherry stares at Miriam.]] / Sherry: Thank you. As I was about to say, that $200 a month rent he'll be paying me is really going to help. / Miriam: Um, yeah, I was totally thinking that too.
