Something Gives Last week I worked Thursday + Friday mornings, 5:30 as usual, but I had Saturday off. / I thought...that I could do SOMETHING Friday night. Stay up AS LATE AS I WANTED. / But I hadn't anticipated my own exhaustion. / Athena: ZZZ / I'm good for the 6 hours of my shift, but after that... / Athena: ZZZ WHUMP! / ...I crash. / Sometimes I get a second wind by the evening, but not so last Friday. / Athena: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ / I watched a shitload of My So-Called Life. Middle school dog walks... / High school movie projects... / Gabe: NIKOLAI!! / And of course LAST summer... / [[Naked people running in the woods.]] / Nostalgia made m lonely, so I texted the Laurel Avenue boys to see if they were up for hanging out. Milk Run I had this dream where I was running a half marathon through some brightly-lit warehouse. / Every time a runner finished a lap, they had to drink a large glass of milk. / I was frustrated: through I had the energy and desire to keep running, with each lap I grew warier of that next damn glass of milk. / During my senior year of high school, I watched my peers, as part of a 24 hour scavenger hunt, run back and forth across a small stretch of park. / With each lap, they had to drink a glass of milk. I watched dozens of teenagers vomit milk that day. / I guess the dream came partly from that memory. / But it's also about the frustration I'm feeling right now. / Feeling like I wanna run somewhere, fast, and feeling like I could DO it, too. / ...Except there's some stupid, sickening extra something slowing me down. / Damn milk.
MIX WEEKEND! MIX is UPON US!
Name Droppings AT THE MINNEAPOLIS INDIE XPO AFTER-PARTY. ALTERED ESTHETICS. AUGUST 21, 2010. / Athena: Jason watched my booth for awhile today so that I could go to the John Porcellino panel. / [[Present: Kevin Cannon, Britt c.h., Jason, Lars Martinson.]] / Athena: Danno called him a "booth beard." Like instead of the booth BABES at regular conventions. / Britt: Hmm...that makes me think of the term "beard," though... Whose gayness is the booth beard covering? / Jason: The booth's! / Athena: HA! With all the girly indie comics! / Jason: I really like these sensitive autobio comics... / Jason:...I ALSO LIKE BEING A LUMBERJACK.
Nap Or No Nap The bosses are on vacation. / Athena has to be at work at 5:30. / Gus has to be at work at 5:00. / Abby has to be at work at 4:00. / Athena: How do you guys DO this? / Gus: Eh... / Gus: Sometimes I take a nap...but then I can't fall asleep at night till really late...so then I'm really tired the next day. Sometimes I don't take a nap...then I'm just tired...all day... It's not that bad. / Gus and Abby: Heh... Heh... Exhausting Fantasies When I got bored and pissed off during high school classes, I'd picture a huge dragon bursting forth from my mouth, coating the classroom in flames. / In college, when I was stressed and anxious, I would picture dozens of knives slicing me into pieces. / These days, exhausted and uncertain, I just imagine myself with giant robot arms.
Mop(p)ing DRAWN ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2010 / I'm wearing a sweater that may once have belonged to one of Goldfeather's ex-boyfriends. / Yesterday at the Open Book cafe I had a great conversation with Sarah Morean (whose last name I was mispronouncing for way too long--this is one problem with discovering neat people via The Internet.) / Yesterday I also spent a long afternoon lying around with Jason. / (Unfortunately, it felt like five minutes. Goddamnit.) / Driving home I was weepy. Too much caffeine, not enough sleep, no direction, take yer pick, blah blah blah. / I got home to find my parents' party in full swing. A bunch of grown-ups chuckling at me for going to bed so early. / Work this morning was stressful. I mopped. / (Too many customers.) / (Ammonia-crazed.) / I suck at mopping. / How pathetic is that? / Athena: Why do parents tell their children that they're special? / Athena: We're not special. / [[She mops.]]

Seven Hour Comic Day The Geek Report went great, and hey, it looks like I'll be 15 minutes early to 24 Hour Comic Day! / Um...why won't the key turn? / Angry Athena: 15 minutes later: BANG BANG BANG! / 50 minutes later than that: Athena reading comic with arrow pointing to it "Good comic, though". (Waiting for AAA) / AAA repair man waving: Fixed my silly problem in 5 seconds. / Athena arriving at Open Book. (11:00 a.m. now) / Athena: Last night I dreamed that people would, like, KIDNAP us, and we'd just like, wake up in this basement and have comic jams. / Danno: That sounds pretty close to real life.
Detective/Reporter/Lawyer Three Jobs I PROBABLY wouldn't like but TOTALLY glamorize in my head: / (Athena: mmm mmmm) / DETECTIVE, REPORTER, & LAWYER / DETECTIVE is an obvious one, so heavily coated in the sex and mystery of noir. / I love the idea of being able to find information, no matter how well hidden, in order to get the real story. / Athena: This is the place. / It's the same thing with REPORTERS: getting the TRUTH. By pulling something secret and juicy out of the people you interview. / Athena: This can be...off the record. / It's often less noble, with reporters...but it's also about writing. In capable hands, it becomes its own art form. / In media, LAWYERS are often reduced to greedy, ruthless liars... / ...but once in awhile you get an Atticus Finch. / Again, it's a job about getting past emotion, gossip, and hearsay... / Athena: That's IT! / ...till you hit on FACT. An ESSENTIAL TRUTH. / ESSENTIAL TRUTH is, well, the essence of ART! / Athena: SHOW don't TELL! The TELLING detail! The PERSONAL is UNIVERSAL! / The problem is that there's rarely one truth. / I wouldn't know where to start with those jobs!
Because It's Fight Club At the Carleton Library Reserves Desk. Fall 2010. / Reserves Dan: And since this is on Closed Reserves, you can only check it out for 3 hours. / Girl Student: Oh, really? / Girl Student: Hmm, I wonder how long it is-- / Reserves Dan and Boy Student: A HUNDRED AND FORTY MINUTES. / Girl Student: Ha ha! How did you both KNOW that? / Boy Student: BECAUSE IT'S FIGHT CLUB. / Reserves Dan: Heh Heh Heh

In Retrospect, I Was Never Much Fun My biggest fear about graduating from college was that the demands of a job would leave no time for comics and other creative projects. / Athena (holding coffee drink and library book, thinking): Where is the third hand for my pencil? / While it has been a HUGE relief to discover that I still have time for comics... / (after work, stinking of sweat and espresso, drawing comics) / ...something still had to go. / (brain is at Comic + Work capacity) / In retrospect, it seems obvious that for me that thing is a social life. / Athena (clutching comics and money): oh.
