Block II: 1 Soli: What did you think of the movie? / Midge: I think we should have figured out what the necklace was first. / Soli: That's not your opinion of the movie. / Gunthere: I liked it. / Midge: My opinion is that is was okay, but I couldn't stop wondering about the necklace. / Soli: Well, the easiest thing would be to just ask someone about it. / Midge: Who? / Gunthere: Sampson might know. / Midge: Just because you have a crush on my brother doesn't mean he knows everything. / Gunthere: HEY! / Soli: Guys, come on. I think the best person to ask would be Mr. Lyl. As general librarian he knows a lot of stuff. / Midge: That sounds good. / Gunthere: So--what did you think of the movie? / Soli: It needed more zombies.
Block II: 2 Soli: Okay Gunthere, go ask him. / Gunthere: I don't wanna. / Soli: Don't be such a xenophobe, he won't bite your head off. / Gunthere: I just don't know him very well. / Soli: I forgot about your crippling shyness. Fine, I'll go ask. / Midge: He can't bite, Quadca don't have any teeth. / Soli: Mr. Lyl--do you know what this is? / Mr Lyl: [looks at necklace] / Mr Lyl: [searches on computer banks] / Soli: [looking at reader] Ooh--it's old. Labelled PSF Terran. / Midge: It holds data. / Gunthere: Does the Mother Port have a spot for it? / Soli: Yep. / Midge: Stellar! / Midge: Let's go see what's on the this thing. / Soli: Thanks Mr. Lyl.
Block I: 1 space. / the dark eternal vampire. / depressurizing / your / soul. / Midge: That's mega deep Soli. / Soli: I guess. / Midge: 'Cmon, it's great! You capture the meaninglessness of life in space. It's almost nihilistic! / Soli: I'm not nihilistic. / Midge: Sure you are. / Soli: Pfft. I'm apathetic at best.
Block I: 2 Midge: But that's close-- / Soli: Not really. I mean, the fact that I care if I am or not sort of invalidates nihilism. / Midge: Huh, I hadn't thought of that. / Soli: Since, you know, nihilism is the ultimate in not caring-- / Midge: Well, duh. / Soli: About anything really. / Midge: Isn't that sort of like apathy? / Soli: I think apathy is sort of specific, I mean, I'm apathetic about math and the stupid floatball team and chemistry. / Midge: That's common sense. / Soli: But I care about other things.
Block I: 3 Midge: Like Aeshel / Soli: SHUT UP! That's not my point. / Midge: Oh? / Soli: My point is, I'm not nihilistic. / Midge: My point is, you like Aeshel. / Soli: Whatever.

Block 1: 4 Soli: [[looks up]] / Soli: [[jumps down from tree]] / Soli: [[falls languidly]] / t equals the square root of 2gd over g / v sub a equals one-half gd / g equals 4.9 / d equals 9.144m / t equals 1.932 / v sub a equals 4.733m/s / foomp / Soli: [[lands]]
Block I: 5 Soli: [[standing in doorway of room]] / Soli: [[taking off boots while sitting on bed]] / Soli: [[under covers]] / Soli: [[sitting up in bed]] / Soli: [[leaves room]]
Block I: 6 [[Soli and Mona sitting at kitchen counter, Mona is reading, Soli is stirring a drink in a mug.]] / Mona: Have something solid to eat too. / Soli: Yeah Mom. / Mona: Did you sleep in the clothes you wore yesterday? / Soli: I wore pyjamas yesterday. / Mona: *Snort* It's better than black. / Soli: MOM! / Mona: Eat something. You have to dissect in science today and you want something in your stomach if you vomit. / Soli: I'm not going to puke. / Mona: Just in case.
Block I: 7 [[The door to room E209. Biology Lab A3]] / Teacher: Class, you should have all become acquainted with the structure of the heart from the diagram holos I gave you all last week. / [[Alien students standing at desks, hearts in trays in front of them]] / [[The teacher is squid-like and holding a paper]] / Teacher: I want you to now dissect and record your observations as you go -- beginning with the exterior of the organ. / [[Gunthere looks ill. Soli seems disinterested.]] / Teacher: This should give those of you who are queasy time to buck it up and take it like scientists. / Gunthere: <>
Block I: 8 [[Soli cringes, holding a scalpel.]] / Soli: [[thinking]] Don't be gross oh please don't be gross pretty please don't be / [[A very, very large heart in the centre of the page with lines radiating from its middle.]] / [[Soli smiles]] / Soli: [[thinking]] Okay. This is awesome.

Block I: 9 [[Soli and Midge stand outside Midge's open lockers. Midge has ceremonial makeup on and around her eyes.]] / Soli: Hey Midge -- you're dressed up! / Midge: I have a presentation in economics next period. / [[A view from the inside of her locker. Books inside: "Principles of Microeconomics", "Model Nations Guidelines" and "Robert's Rules of Order"]] / Midge: So, how was cutting up organs? / Soli: Fantastical awesome. / Midge: Really? / Soli: Serious, I mean, it was drained of blood and everything, so there wasn't any ookiness. It was just, like this pristine thing that was astonishingly simple for what it does. / Midge: Huh. / Soli: Gunthere almost puked though. / Midge: That sucks. Doesn't she want to be a surgeon? / Soli: Well, her family all is and I guess she wants to -- / [[A large, round-headed student in a lettered jacket leans on the locker beside Soli and Midge.]] / Student: Hey PIDGE, going to a funeral for third period?
Block I: 10 [[Midge, angry.]] / Midge: It's ceremonial, lackwit. / [[Round-headed student, smirking.]] / Student: A funeral is a ceremony. / [[All three in front of the locker. Midge crosses her arms.]] / Soli: She has a presentation for class, man. / Student: And what's your excuse? A presentation on vampires?! / [[Closeup: Midge and other student.]] / Midge: Why are you hassling Soli about her makeup? / Student: She's asking for it with that stupid goth look. / Midge: It is NOT just a LOOK! / [[Midge's hand shutting her locker.]] / Locker: SLAM / [[Soli and Midge silhouetted in the hallway.]] / Soli: Thanks Midge. / Midge: No worries, the guy is a major jerk. / [[Closeup: Soli and Midge.]] / Soli: Maybe he had a point though. / Midge: What? / [[Soli turns, looking up.]] / Soli: What if it is "just a look"? / [[Midge in profile, smiling.]] / Midge: C'mon, don't let him get to you -- now, who's my Goth Princess? / [[Soli in profile, smiling. Midge pokes her nose.]] / Soli: _I am._ / Midge: Right. See you after class. / [[Soli waves.]] / Soli: Later.
Block I: 11 [[Soli at her desk, looking her pad in boredom.]] / Teacher: All right, last class we took a look at terran Romanesque art and architecture, which we saw was a romanticized view of terra's ever-beloved Greco Romans. As time wore on, changes in the economy shifted views in the church. The Roman arches adapted, became more pointed, much more structurally sound, allowing for taller ceilings, more windows, things like clerestories -- write this down -- which are high walls with a band of narrow windows. The increased amount of light was, as with most things, directly influenced by the changing church doctrine. God was light and it was through these windows and the new stained glass that they felt the spirit of God touched the people... / [[Soli smirks, doodling. On the pad is a stick figure in crazy pants. A bird above him is labelled "FAt bird". There are swirls and flowers in the corner of the pad.]] / Stick Figure: Look at my crazy pants! / Teacher: ...The overall style of French court was further reflected in the clothing which were that of the classic fairy-tale terran princess. / [[Closeup: Soli.]] / Soli: [[thinking]] Princess? / [[The backs of students heads as they look at two large pictures. The first is a portrait of a terran medieval princess in cloak and hood. The second is a trefoil window.]] / Teacher [[with monocle, indicating pictures.]] / Teacher: As we've noted previously; fine art, architecture and fashion are closely linked. The style de jour was, bluntly, GAUDY -- and in kinder terms, passion for texture and details.
Block I: 12 [[Soli's Terran Art History I class, first shot is tight on notes being written.]] / Written notes: Abbot Suger-St Denis-first example of Scholastisisim-a turn to science-rose / <> / Professor Fitz-Lee: Class dismissed. / [[Students leaving, walking past Fitz-Lee's desk]] / Professor Fitz-Lee: Soli, it looked like you were actually paying attention today. / Soli: Um, yeah--this group is galaxies better than the Romanesque stuff. / Professor Fitz-Lee: Why exactly? / Soli: Well they had stained glass for instance, / Professor Fitz-Lee: And? / Soli: And that's something the Romanists-- / Professor Fitz-Lee: Romanesque. / Soli: Wouldn't of had, what with the whole purist, humanist thing--which I don't totally get, / Professor Fitz-Lee: It'll be on the test. / Soli: Oh, well anyway, I like French Court best. / Professor Fitz-Lee: Most people prefer one or the other, there are books on hold in the library that may help you figure out the "Purist, Humanist thing." / Soli: Um, cool. I'd better get to lunch.
Block I: 13 [[Walking down school hallway]] / Gunthere: Hey Soli, wait up! / Gunthere: [[holding up lunch box]] Didn't bring with today? / Soli: Nah, figured I'd rough it, today is breakfast for lunch anyway. / Gunthere: You've got a titanium stomach to eat cafeteria food--especially after dissecting today. / [["Cafeteria" sign behind them]] / Soli: They can't mess up flapjacks, and cutting up that heart didn't bother me one bit. / [[In cafeteria, with standard buffet line, multiple clocks (showing different systems' local times) are on the wall]] / Gunthere: Like I said, a titanium stomach. / Soli: Save me a place? / Gunthere: Sure thing. / [[At a table]] / Midge: Hey Gunthere, is Soli getting some chow? / Gunthere: Yup. / [[close up of Gunthere's lunch box contents]] / Gunthere: I am so not hungry.

Block I: 14 [[Midge and Gunthere, sitting at a cafeteria table.]] / Gunthere: Ugh, I don't know how I'll handle pre-med if this is how I react to a lab-grown heart. / Midge: Oh, Rle-Rle, you've got plenty of time to figure that out. / Gunthere: You'd think so. / [[Soli ladling syrup on pancakes, with expanse of cafeteria behind her]] / [[Back at the table.]] / Soli: So, how was the presentation? / Midge: It was fine, but those heathens in my class could care less about the Socio-Economic situation on Paulusnavalis. / Gunthere: Um--lemme remember how you put it--"A delicate balance of native marine society and the near colonization by space trainees?" / Midge: Spot on! / Gunthere: I try. / [[Gunthere looking quite pleased with herself]]
Block I: 15 [[Sitting at a cafeteria table.]] / Soli: Are either of you taking your study period in the library? / Midge: Nope, I've got a group think for a test in Government. / Gunthere: Sorry Sol, I would, but study and Ag are switched this week so we can have more time on the machines. / [[Wider view of cafeteria, with arches and a catwalk hung with vines and flowers.]] / Midge: Which ones? / Gunthere: Chemical balance and air quality, it's mostly remedial, but it's the coolest bunch of plants. / Soli: Nerd.
Block I: 16 [[In library]] / Soli: Hiya Mr. Lyl, I'm just here to get some books on hold. / [[Soli at a terminal]] / Terminal: [[on screen]] Hello Soli search: IMAGE, ARTICLE, BOOKS ON HOLD / Terminal: [[on screen]] Books on Hold: GENERAL PHYSICS, MAMMALIAN ANATOMY, TERRAN ART HISTORY I / Terminal: [[on screen]] Terran Art History I: ETRUSCAN, IMPERIAL ROMAN, EARLY CHRISTIAN, ROMANESQUE / Soli: Stupid Romanesque. / Soli: Hey Mir. Lyl--what do you recommend on French Court? Lots of pictures. / Mr. Lyl: [[on keyboard]] tap tap tap / [[On Soli's handheld reader: New books received]] / Soli: Thanks!
Block I: 17 [[In Ag Nursery]] / Mr. Chit: As you know, the balance in the tanks must be kept within acceptable levels. Today you'll check the meters and test the mix if necessary. Record your observations and let me know if anything is off so the class can go over the balancing procedures together. / Mr. Chit: Gunthere / Mr. Chit: You're at rack C12 / Gunthere: 'Kay. / Mr. Chit: I know this is remedial for you. Thanks for bearing with us. / Gunthere: [[Goes to rack C12]] / Gunthere: [[Sees something in seedling flat.]] / [[Half-buried in dirt is what looks like a necklace and pendant. / Mr. Chit: Class, let's gather by the "B" racks. Ju-Ju has found a discrepancy. / Gunthere: [[frowning at necklace in her hand]] / Gunthere: [[pockets necklace]]
Block I: 18 [[Soli is lying on her back in bed, reading.]] / [[Soli's arm thingy makes noise]] / Midge: [[via arm thingy phone connection]] Hey Soli, whatcha doin'? / Soli: Just reading. / Midge: [[via arm thingy phone connection]] Do you want to meet Gunthere and me at the rec for a movie? / Soli: Sure, I don't have much important homework anyway. / [[Soli peeks into Mona's office/workroom]] / Soli: Hey Mom, I'm going to see a movie with Midge and Gunthere. / Mona: Ooh--before you go, could you take a look at this floor plan? / Mona: It's for professor Chit and her husband. They want their accommodations to be more burrow-like. / Soli: It looks fine Mom, very burrow-y. / Mona: But not too? They want visitors to feel comfortable. / Soli: It's fine Mom, stop worrying.

Block I: 19 [[Mona's office/studio]] / Mona: It's just important I get this right. If it's known I do a good job on Tchg domiciles, I'll get more business. / Soli: [[off-panel]] Mom, I'm sure they'll like it. / Mona: Alright Sol, have fun at the movie--say hi to the girls. / Soli: Thanks mom, you have fun designing stuff. / Mona: [[looking at drafting table]] I'm sure I will. / [[In atrium]] / Soli: Whoop! I always forget about the difference in G 'down' here. / Midge: It's your fault for using the lift, if you take the stairs you get acclimatized. / Soli: Where's Rle-Rle? / Gunthere: [[off-panel]] Over here, I'm just looking at the seedlings. / [[Soli and Gunthere looking at a seedling sprout]] / Soli: Oh! The tree made babies. / Gunthere: If you ask the parks director, I bet he'd give you one to raise. / Soli: Stellar. / Midge: [[off-panel]] C'mon guys, I don't want to miss the news reel. / Soli: You're a nerd for news. / [[Girls standing around tree]] / Midge: Ha-ha. Funny girl. / Soli: [[laughing]] Nerd. / Gunthere: Um guys? Before we go, I want to show you something I found in the nursery.
Block I: 20 [[Close up: Gunthere's hand, holding necklace, Soli's hand reaching for it.]] / Gunthere: It was in the root mix. / Soli: The pebble things you use instead of dirt? What was a necklace doing in that? / Midge: [[off-panel]] The newsreels. / Gunthere: It was probably in one of the bags the stuff gets shipped in. / Gunthere: [[looking excited]] We find debris all the time. Normally native rocks or pieces of metal. Once there was a goddess figurine. / Soli: [[playing with necklace]] What goddess? / Midge: [[annoyed]] Focus. / Gunthere: Anyway, the mix is filtered before we use it, but foreign objects still get through. / Soli: Oops. / Gunthere: Oops is right. You don't want the mix contaminated. / Soli: No--I meant "Oops, I think I broke the necklace." / Gunthere and Midge: SOLI! / Soli: Well, maybe not broke. It came apart like it was meant to. / [[Close-up of necklace in two parts]] / Soli: See? / Midge: What in the floating islands is that? / Midge: We're going to miss the beginning of the movie, not to mention the newsreels. / Gunthere: Right, let's figure this out after the movie. / Soli: It's not as if the fate of the System hangs in the balance.
Block II: Cover The cover for Block II. / The girls are apparently in micro-gravity.
Block II: 3 Gunthere: 'kay, here's what's on it. / Midge: It's just a bunch of text files. / Soli: There isn't much there. / Midge: Well, it's antiquated technology, bulky and obsolete, like your arm things. / [[over an article titled "In Commerce Contested"]] / Soli: Huh, some of these are articles. / Midge: I don't get it. / Soli: It's boring. Financial junk, right up Midge's alley. / Midge: What did you expect? The last log of a ship captured by space pirates? / Soli: Well -- yeah. / Gunthere: Some of the files look like they're scientific notes and observations. / Soli: Great, something for each of you brains and nothing for me.
Block II: 4 [[In library, at computer station]] / Gunthere: So, I've copied the articles to Midge's console and the notes to mine. / Midge: The articles should give me a more exact time period, if there isn't a date in there. / Gunthere: I can find out where the root mix came from, maybe it'll give us why the necklace was there. / Soli: [[playing with hair, looking pissed]] You two are such grade-a detectives. / Midge: Don't get in a snit. You can keep the necklace. / Soli: Oh yay. / Midge: And maybe something will come of that. / Soli: Hmph. Give me the thing. I should probably get back anyway and finish homework. / Gunthere: Oh. Well, see you later. / Midge: Yeah, later Soli. / Soli: See you tomorrow. / Soli: [[to necklace]] Stupid necklace, why couldn't you be something cool?

Block II: 5 [[In Soli's room, Soli lying on her stomach on her bed, reading, Mona leaning against the door frame.]] / Mona: Hey girl, how was the movie? / Soli: Hm? Oh, it was okay. / Mona: What's this [[picks up necklace]] / Soli: Some data thing Gunthere found. We went to the library to figure it out. That's why I was late getting back. / Mona: Data thing? / [[Extreme close-up of a logo, a frog and three circles on the side of the data port]] / Soli: Yeah, PSF Terran. It comes apart. / Mona: [[peering at necklace]] Huh, I've seen this before. / Soli: What? / Mona: The symbol here. I remember it from school or something. / Soli: So tell me. / Mona: [[sitting on edge of Soli's bed]] Something to do with commerce, I think. / Soli: There were articles about economics on it. Anything else? / Mona: It's foggy. You know, it has been a while since I was in school. Let me sleep on it, see if I can remember more. / [[Soli, alone, sitting cross-legged on her bed.]]
Block II: 6 Soli lying in bed / Soli sleeping / Crazy frog in Revolutionary era clothes with a hook hand and multiple tounges crashes through a rose window, coins and glass shattering around. / Soli opens her eyes / Soli: Jeez.
Block II: 7 [[At kitchen counter. Soli is rubbing eyes and sleepy, Mona is reading and drinking coffee.]] / Mona: Morning Soli. / Soli: [[stretching]] Do you *YAWN* remember anything else? / Mona: Slow down, I haven't finished my first cup of coffee yet. / Soli: Ugh, I just want something to tell Midge and Rle-Rle, there was stuff on the necklace that was fascinating to both those brains and nothing I could wrap my dumb head around. / Mona: Now Soli, you girls are all smart in your own fields. Gunthere told me herself that she's no better at bio-ag than anyone else in her family. / Soli: Small comfort, her family is a pack of geniuses. / Mona: Settle down, you do have something to show the girls. I pulled an old text out and marked the relevant sections. / Soli: Oh stellar mom! Thanks. / Mona: I do what I can.
Block II: 8 [[In kitchen]] / Soli: Wow, this is old, is it from primary school or something? / Mona: No, third-year prep. / Soli: Oh. / Mona: It is out-moded technology. This one is designed to hold only the texts needed for one term, which would be wiped when classes were over, notes and all. / Soli: What if you wanted to keep something, couldn't you just transfer it? / Mona: Not legally. If you wanted to keep a text, you'd forfeit the deposit. Same as if you lost the reader. I only have this one because my school switched to an earlier version of the one you use. / Soli: That's weird. / Mona: You can figure out the navigation? / Soli: Yup. / Mona: Shoo then--get ready for school. / Reader text: [[over Soli brushing teeth]] . . . and so it was expected that the fortune would be shared. Despite the general opinion, Judge Mathias ruled instead . . . / Reader text: [[over Soli brushing hair]] . . . like anything he crafted, the symbol of the guild itself was carefully wrought, packed with as much symbology as he could stand . . . / Reader text: [[over Soli putting on arm things]] . . . it was only with such careful planning that the ICC passed beyond infancy, that it lasted as long as it did . . .
Block II: 9 [[In the biology lab]] / Gunthere: Hey Soli. / Soli: Morning, Rle-Rle. Sorry about being snappy yesterday. / Gunthere: No worries. / Soli: I did end up getting something from the necklace. Well from my mom anyway. / Gunthere: What? / Professor Chit: Okay class, let's review yesterday's butchering you tried to pass off as dissection. / Soli: Later. / Professor Chit: [[off-panel, Soli is looking at her reader]] Now, if you look at your notes, we'll. . . / Reader text: [[the textbook Mona gave Soli is on top of the reader that holds the class notes in Soli's hands]] . . . learn as we go along that certain eco-poli models will reoccur despite previous disasters . . . / Professor Chit: [[off-panel]] So let's not make the same mistakes next time. Dismissed. / [[Walking down hallway]] / Soli: My mom recognized the symbol on the necklace. / Gunthere: No way! / Soli: Serious. She gave me this old text on it. / Soli: How's your part? / Gunthere: It seems to be field notes; local flora and fauna, the weather, that sort of thing. / Soli: Nice. / Gunthere: Ugh. Math next. / Soli: It's awful. / Gunthere: I know. They're teaching us so slowly. I'm impatient to get to the good stuff. / Soli: Right, that's what I meant.
