Escape Phrase 13 Jimothy: What's so funny? / Tsamantha: Oh, sorry, I still can't believe you called 911 when we were in the middle of a police medslab. / Jimothy: Bah. I was scared. / Tsamantha: I know. I'll try to stop smirking, somehow. / Tsamantha: It doesn't really itch at me, though -- there's no horror in MY forgetting where you live. / Jimothy: Fair enough. I just... I can't even be sure of what I DO remember -- all the context is gone. Soap bubbles in a raging river. / [[Night has fallen.]] / Jimothy: I'll tell you what I CAN remember: my dreams. They're all there, clear as day, right back to what must be childhood. I don't even have to try, they're clearer than anything I just imagine. Brighter. Remembering them is like dreaming them again. / Tsamantha: I'm glad you remember ME at least. / Jimothy: Of course! You're... you're in my dreams.
Escape Phrase 14 [[Tsamantha is driving a car. Jimothy rides shotgun.]] / Jimothy: I can spell you for a while... / Tsamantha: Can you? How about BACKWARDS? / [[Jimothy is now driving. Jim. / Jimothy: ... Yeah? / Tsamantha: I... think... you need to try saying the "phrase" again. / Jimothy: WHAT?! / Tsamantha: How else are we going to figure this out? / Jimothy: Why do we need to do that? The way things are now, uh, out here... I LIKE the status quo.
Escape Phrase 16 [[Jimothy is chopping onions while Tsamantha tends to a pot of tomatoes and spices.]] / Jimothy: Where did YOU go? Was it like falling asleep? Were you POSSESSED? / Tsamantha: No, it was... it was like when you're doing something interesting and time stops passing inside you. So, when it stopped, yeah, like waking up, but it wasn't... did you chop the onions? Hand them over. It wasn't bad. It was familiar. / [[Tsamantha adds the onions to the sauce.]] / Jimothy: I bet that's part of why you're not as scared of it as I am. Of saying it again. / [[Tsamantha grinds some black pepper into the sauce.]] / Tsamantha: Maybe. / Tsamantha: Yeah, you're probably right. I SHOULD be scared. The cops totally knew about it, or suspected SOMETHING about me. / <> / [[Jimothy puts some spaghetti in a pot of boiling water.]] / Jimothy: Did you... did you struggle? / Tsamantha: Not at first. / Tsamantha: Then I saw where they were taking me. Even if it had been just to see, to look at my mom again, it was creepy as hell.
Escape Phrase 17 [[Jimothy is in a phone booth. Tsamantha sits in a parked car nearby.]] / Jimothy: Of course I can't tell you. ... I'm not being paranoid, it's likely the police ARE listening. That's not funny, Thomis. / Jimothy: ... / Jimothy: I... I can't and won't promise to tell her that, no, because it is NOT FUNNY.
Escape Phrase 18 [[Tsamantha is driving herself and Jimothy back to the cabin.]] / Tsamantha: What did he say that bothered you so much? / Jimothy: Ugh, he said your... / [[Tsamantha's eyes narrow in surprise.]] / Tsamantha: Hold on... I've heard so much about you! / Persephone: It's sort of silly, really -- Tsam's known you for years but I've never had the chance to meet you. / Persephone: Ah well, I suppose she made up for it with how she'd talk about you ALmost EVery NIGHT. Isn't that right, dear? / [[Tsamantha has a shocked look on her face.]] / Tsamantha: ... / Persephone: Oh, silly girl! It's too late to be shy about it now. I don't mean to be embarassing you, though -- it's just what mothers do best. See you guys later. / Tsamantha: So, how'd it go? / Jimothy: Class was fine. Thom... it's like nothing happened. Do you? / Jimothy: I... / Jimothy: ... Yeah.
Escape Phrase 22 [[Tsamantha is talking on the telephone. Jimothy is in a nearby room reading a book, oblivious.]] / Tsamantha: It's only been a few weeks! It's really scary. What should I do? Will it happen to me? / Tsamantha: You did? He didn't tell me. Does he not trust me now, or did he forget that, too? / Tsamantha: Yeah, I know. We need to get out of here. Can I count on you? Will you help? / Tsamantha: Thank you, Professor. I owe you.
Escape Phrase 23 [[Jimothy is walking down the street at night. A police car drives slowly by, the cop inside glaring ominously.]] / Jimothy: Well... / Jimothy: I know my way around town, but none of it is familiar. Escape Phrase 25 [[Dr Quickly is leading Jimothy down a confusingly constructed hallway.]] / Jimothy: How much farther do we have to go? Your... paint job is giving me a headache. / Dr Quickly: Patience, my boy! Not much farther now! / Jimothy: These walls are... weird. / Dr Quickly: Oh, yes, well the best defense is a good, er, offense. / Jimothy: And you're really bringing me to Tsam? / Dr Quickly: It must be hard to trust ANYONE at this point. / Jimothy: Saying stuff like that doesn't exactly help... / [[Tsamantha is in a comic panel above another comic panel where Jimothy is visible.]] / Tsamantha: Jim! Up here! You made it! / Jimothy: Tsam! Uh... where are you?
Escape Phrase 26 [[Jimothy and Tsamantha are being led down a strange hallway by Dr Quickly. A large poster has the escape phrase on it: "NO TRIFLING SIX EVENT MOUSE WILL BRING US TOGETHER". A smaller poster says "SAFETY" lies in the direction they are going and "DANGER" lies whence they came.]] / Tsamantha: Oh, Jim, look... / Jimothy: Hey! Oh, that's weird. What... / Jimothy: Professor, what does it MEAN? / Dr Quickly: Oh, it's just a statistically unlikely bunch of words I found at the bottom of a junk email. / Dr Quickly: I thought it had a nice ring to it: surreal, sinister, portentous. / Dr Quickly: Pretentious, too, I guess. Anyway, that's why we used it. / Tsamantha: (Jim, he's really creepy...) / Jimothy: (He'll explain things soon, I'm hoping.)
Escape Phrase 27 Dr Quickly: It was a long, long time ago. My colleagues and I each took on a separate aspect and together we shaped... everything you see. I am Q, the observer, the font of Qualia. L was the frame, the Laws. H was the dynamo, the womb's Hearth. And OO was... everything else. The substance. So, all in one, we were L H OO Q. But that was long ago. I'm Dr Quickly now, a professor. I don't know who they are or if I'd recognize them, even. / Dr Quickly: Nevertheless, I know that something has gone most horribly wrong. The narrative thread is tangled and broken: the days pass too fast and the seasons are mixed; things happen -- horrid unforgettable things! -- and moments after, no-one remembers. But you do. You two, my dear children, know something is wrong and it makes you uneasy. I have done my best to hide you from the harmful secret truth but to be safe you must now learn it. / Dr Quickly: So know then, you two are chosen. You have been chosen since before I was even Q. You exist to serve this world; you exist to shape it. And with luck you will preserve and restore it, not hasten its dissolution. The Escape Phrase is the key to your powers. It is the key turning the lock in your minds. When the time comes you will use it to become the creatures of infinite potential you were born to be. / Dr Quickly: For this world exists to nurture you; it was put in motion l ike a vast clockwork yolk for your potential to grow in. We four were artists, and we thought we would try our hands at something grand. And now you have come! And not a moment too soon, as I fear the others have all become impatient and want to tear this glorious place down, to give up. Will you dare to prove yourselves? / Jimothy: Uhhh... / Tsamantha: Um... / Dr Quickly: Well, would you at least like another round of sandwiches?
Escape Phrase 28 [[Dr Quickly is explaining an idea he had.]] / Dr Quickly: You know that feeling? "If I only knew then what I know now"... I figured I should DO something about it. Spent a lot of time thinking about it, trying to figure out how. Fantasizing... / Dr Quickly: I decided just copying my brain into my childhood self made the most sense -- I wouldn't have to worry about trusting myself and all, plus if I did it right when I got a head injury I could pass off the obvious changes in affect as mild brain damage. / Dr Quickly: But, after planning it for years I realized (or came to believe) that I'd already done it. Dozens of times! Here I was, sitting on lifetimes of experience and knowledge and nothing really to show for it. It was a difficult dream to give up. / [[Jimothy and Tsamantha are confronting Dr Quickly about his revelation that they are figments of someone's imagination, sort of.]] / Jimothy: So we're just ROBOTS? Like in my DREAM?! / Dr Quickly: Oh, uh, I don't know. Maybe! Or this is a computer simulation or you're clones or something. It was a long time ago and I wasn't really involved in the implementation. Wasn't interesting. / Tsamantha: You don't KNOW if this is REAL? / Dr Quickly: My dear, of COURSE this is real. / Dr Quickly: Just because the underlying bedrock of your experiential universe might not be, you know, something you've come by honestly doesn't mean you're FAKE. It's one of those things you have to just walk away from. / Dr Quickly: If this world is... fraudulent... it doesn't mean good deeds aren't good deeds. HOW you feel doesn't change WHAT you feel. YOU get to decide what you are, even with all my fancy talk about your magical fates. Do you want any cookies?
Escape Phrase 29 [[The top of the page is text, driving through the layers of comic panels]] / Attackers: AND AS THE TWO YOUTHFUL HEROES STOOD IDLY LISTENING TO THE MAD AND USELESS DRIVEL OF Q WE STRUCK BOLDLY AND WITH GREAT FORCE INTENDING TO DESTROY ALL THREE IN A SINGLE BLOW / Dr Quickly: THEY'VE BROKEN THROUGH THE FOURTH WALL ALREADY! THERE'S NO TIME!! / [[Dr Quickly opens a hatch in the floor labeled "EMERGENCY EXIT".]] / Dr Quickly: QUICK, USE THE ESCAPE (PHRASE) CHUTE! Oh, I wish we had more time. There's so much you still haven't learned! / [[Jimothy and Tsamantha are falling down the chute, screaming.]] / Jimothy and Tsamantha: AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!! / Dr Quickly: DON'T FORGET YOUR LEFTOVERS! / <>
