We know this countryside inside and out, right Fujio? / Fujio: Uh... / Fumio: See? Fujio agrees. / Fumio: Okay, maybe I'm a little lost. Do you recognize anything? / [[Fujio points.]] / Fujio: Well, that angry mob looks kinda familiar. / [[An angry mob of farmers block the road, brandishing faming implements.]] / Farmer 1: Kill the bandits! / Farmer 2: You've pillaged your last farm! / Farmer 3: They're not getting away this time! / Farmer 4: What did my poor chickens ever do to you? / Fujio: Chickens? No Need for Bushido! Page #330 [[Yukizane overlooks a group of soldiers playing Go.]] / Yukizane: Order. Balance Adaptability. These are the virtues that ultimately determine the outcome of wars. / Yukizane: In our practice today, we've worked to master these qualities so that we may defeat even an enemy of greater strength. / [[Yukizane approaches one soldier.]] / Yukizane: Now, let's see what you've learned... / [[Yukizane crouches next to the Go board and points at the pieces.]] / Yukizane: No, no, no. This is the sort of strategy I'd expect from someone who has absolutely no grasp of the basic rules of the game! / Yukizane: What do you have to say for yourself?? / Soldier: Sir, I have absolutely no grasp of the basic rules of the game. / Yukizane: That's no excuse.
No Need for Bushido! Page #331 Yukizane: Sigh, well, let's see how the others fared. / [[Yukizane walks up behind Misaki and inspects her game strategy.]] / Yukizane: Ah! Misaki here understands. / Yukizane: Notice the subtle strategy and the placement of her stones. / Misaki: I made a kitty with my pieces. / [[Misaki made a picture of a cat's face with some stones.]] / {{Yukizane speaks from off panel.}} / Yukizane: Yes, well... / Yukizane: Good job. / [[Yukizane speaks to the soldiers playing Go in the courtyard. Page #332 [[Yukizane picks up Go boards.]] / Yukizane: What a mess! / [[A woman approaches Yukizane.]] / Ayane: Excuse me, mister servant? / Ayane: I've been summoned to meet with Yukizane Masamune. / Ayane: Can you direct me to his quarters? / [[Yukizane blushes.]] / Yukizane: Certainly! It's through the courtyard door, you make a right, then another right, then a left, a right, left, right, left, left, another left, left, right, / [[Ayane looks confused.]] / Yukizane: two lefts, right, then a left after the door on the right, and then a right. Can't miss it. / Ayane: I can't remember that. / Yukizane: Oh, well, I'd lead you there myself, but I need to gather these playing boards first. / Yukizane: Hmm, you know, that gives me a great idea!
No Need for Bushido! Page #333 [[Yukizane, carrying one game board, leads Ayane, carrying eight boards, down the hall.]] / Yukizane: Don't worry, the store room's just at the end of this hall. / Ayane: You said that two halls ago! / Yukizane: Thanks a bunch! Just drop those anywhere. / [[Ayane sets down her boards.]] / Ayane: Hmph! / [[Ayane is annoyed.]] / Ayane: Ok, now can you lead me to Yukizane? / Yukizane: Normally I would, but I happen to know he hasn't called for a consort this night. / [[Ayane puts her palm to her face.]] / Ayane: And how would a servant know of his master's private affairs? / Yukizane: I'm sorry, I haven't properly introduced myself. / Yukizane: I'm Yukizane Masamune, and I didn't call for a consort. / Yukizane: Or for that matter, a- / [[Ayane takes Yukizane hostage, her fan to his throat.]] / Yukizane: Ninja...
No Need for Bushido! Page #334 [[Ayane holds her fan to Yukizane's neck.]] / Yukizane: I'm not dead yet, so I assume you haven't been sent to assassinate me. / Yukizane: What business do you have with the Senshin clan? / Ayane: I've come to negotiate the return of your leader, Masuhiro. / [[Yukizane grins.]] / Yukizane: Excellent! But I make it a habit not to discuss such important matters with a blade to my throat. / [[Ayane lowers her fan.]] / [[Ayane slips her fan under her belt.]] / [[Yukizane laughs.]] / See? I knew we could be amiable about all this. / Yukizane: Now there's certain protocol to these things. I'll have a guard take you to a room for the night and we'll begin negotiations tomorrow... / [[Ayane disappears.]] / Yukizane: Or you can just pop in by yourself, that's fine too.

No Need for Bushido! Page #335 [[Yukizane and Kagome are sitting in a large room.]] / Narrator: The next day... / Kagome: This is a bad idea. Maybe we shouldn't go through with it... / Yukizane: Now Sis, you just don't understand the art of bargaining. / [[Ayane enters, wearing one of her revealing outfits.]] / Yukizane: Ah, Miss Ninja! / Yukizane: I see you've decided to change into something a little more comfortable. / [[Ayane sits.]] / Ayane: Yukizane, I wish to get this over as quickly as possible. / [[Kagome stares at Ayane's outfit.]] / Yukizane: Very well. / Yukizane: I suggest a starting offer of 5,000 Ryo. / [[Ayane smiles.]] / Ayane: 5,000!? You're expecting us to pay you for your leader? / [[Kagome is flabbergasted.]] / Yukizane: Our former leader.
No Need for Bushido! Page #0336 [[Ayane sits before Yukizane and Kagome.]] / Ayane: You're trying to usurp Masuhiro's power in his absence?? / Yukizane: Perhaps, but you do seem surprisingly eager to return him. For the right price I might consider relieving myself of the hassles of leadership. Did Hirotomo decide not to pay you for his assassination? / [[Ayane is angry.]] / Ayane: Pompous fool! Hirotomo didn't hire us, his son did! And he only paid us for kidnapping him to instigate a war! / [[Yukizane makes a thinking pose.]] / Yukizane: Really... / [[Ayane points.]] / Ayane: And another thing, you're- / [[Ayane's hand drops.]] / Ayane: You're... / Ayane: Not nearly as dumb as you look. / [[Yukizane smiles. Kagome is relieved.]] / Yukizane: Let's get to the real negotiations. Unless, of course, you'd like to give up any other interesting information.
No Need for Bushido! Page #337 [[The sun sets as Ken, Cho, Yorikiro, Ina, Fumio and Fujio approach a village.]] / Fumio: Ok, I'm pretty sure we didn't pillage that village up ahead. Not significantly, anyway. / Ina: Thank the gods, I could use a moment to rest. / [[Matrix watches from afar.]] / Matrix: Rest, ha! I doubt it. / [[Lex walk up behind Matrix.]] / Lex: You know, a tendency to talk to oneself is a sign of unease. / Matrix: Really, I heard it was an indicator of intelligence. / Matrix: Besodes, what do I have to be uneasy about? From here it looks like I'm winning our little wager. / Lex: Hmm, I'll admit he has gotten further than I would have expected... on his own.
No Need for Bushido! Page #338 [[Matrix sits on a boulder. Lex stands next to a stand of trees.]] / Matrix: What're you implying? / Matrix: My involvement has been insignificant. / Lex: You're playing rather close to the line, Matrix. / {{Lex speaks from off panel.}} / Lex: And if I find you've crossed it, you will lose. / [[Lex walks away. Vapor swirls around him.]] / <> / [[Lex starts to disappear.]] / [[Lex disappears.]] / [[Matrix flicks away her cigarette.]] / Matrix: Pfft, what a tool.
No Need for Bushido! Page #339 [[Cho, Ken, Fujio, Yorikiro, Ina, and Fumio enter a village.]] / [[The villagers stare at the group.]] / [[Ina speaks privately with Ken.]] / Ina: Is it just me, or do these villagers look a little spooked? / Ken: What're you talkin' about? This is the sort of reaction I always get. / Villager: Excuse me, Samurai-san. Our master, Lord Murasaki Maru, has asked to meet with any samurai that traverse his farmlands. / [[Ken yells and clenches his fist.]] / Ken: Yeah? Well you can tell yer lord I've got a fist that wants to meet his face! / Villager: Huh? / [[Ina steps in front of Ken.]] / Ina: He, heh... what my confrontational friend meant to say was that we don't have the time to- / [[Fumio interrupts.]] / Fumio: Oh, maybe we'll get a free meal out of it! We're so totally there. / Yorikiro: I cast my vote for food.

No Need for Bushido! Page #340 [[Shōnen guides Cho, Fumio, Fujio, Ina, Yorikiro, and Ken to the lord's residence.]] / Shōnen: Please forgive the others. Our village has been burdened with a great deal of trouble as of late. / [[Ina looks at Fumio.]] / Ina: Yeah, and I wonder whose fault that is... / Fumio: Hey, I said it wasn't us. / [[Shōnen approaches the lord's door.]] / Shōnen: This is Lord Maru's estate. / {{Ken speaks from off panel.}} / Ken: This little meeting better be quick. / [[The villager opens the door.]] / <> / Ken: Normally I'd be drunk off my ass within five minutes of entering civilization. / Ken: At this rate, I seriously doubt I'm gonna meet that deadline... / [[Ina and Yorikiro are surprised to see the lord, clothed in purple. Ken dosen't recognize him.]] / Ina: You! / Yorikiro: You! / Ken: Who?
No Need for Bushido! Page #341 [[Maru points at Yorikiro.]] / Maru: By the Kami! / Maru: I never thought I'd see you people again! / [[Yorikiro is surprised.]] / Yorikiro: Ina, it's the guy who killed me! / Ina: Tried... / Yorikiro: It's the guy who tried to kill me! / [[Ken yells at Yorikiro.]] / Ken: Another one?? / Ken: Dammit, Wataro, I'm losing count of all the guys tryin' to kill ya! / [[Ken points at Maru]] / Ken: How 'bout a freakin' introduction so I can take notes! / Maru: Of course. Shounen, introduce me. / Shounen: I present Lord Murasaki Maru, the owner of these farmlands, and vassal to the Senshin Clan. / Maru: Ahem. / Shounen: Badass vassal to the Senshin Clan.
No Need for Bushido! Page #342 [[Ina hugs Yorikiro. Yorikiro grins.]] / Ina: We're in Senshin territory? We're saved! / Yorikiro: Gehehehee... / [[Ina turns serious, pushing Yorikiro aside.]] / <> / Ina: Lord Maru, I'm Lord Senshin's daughter. I must request that you gather all your samurai immediately! We need your help in a mission to rescue my father from the Izuma ninja clan. / [[Maru looks at Ina.]] / [[Maru starts laughing.]] / Maru: Hahahahahahaha! / [[Ina isn't amused.]] / [[Maru reaches into his clothes for a scroll.]] / Maru: Even if we were to belive your story, I couldn't help you. This is a small farming village. I have only two samurai and they aren't available for some wild goose chase. / Ina: What could possibly be more important than rescuing the lord you've sworn to protect?? / [[Maru holds out the unrolled scroll.]] / Maru: This. / Ina: By the kami!
No Need for Bushido! Page #343 [[Cho, Yorikiro, Ina, Maru, Fujio, Fumio and Ken are seated around a table. Shonen is seated at Maru's side.]] / Maru: The Wataro army is coming, and this village will be the first incursion of the war. / Maru: So this General Atsumori guy is telling us we can either get out of their way or get mowed over. / [[Fumio and Fujio start to get up.]] / Fujio: Oh, sounds like serious business! / Fumio: Well, it's been fun but we've gotta run! / Ina: Sit down! / [[Fumio and Fujio sit.]] / Maru: We're in a strategically significant bottleneck that controls the border between the Wataro and Senshin clans. Losing the village is not an option. / Ina: But how can you defend against the entire Wataro army with just two samurai? / Maru: That's where you guys come in. / [[Ina puts her hand to her face.]] / Ina: Why did I ask? Why do I always have to ask?
No Need for Bushido! Page #344 Maru: As soon as I received the Wataro ultimatum, I sent a request to the nearest army contingent for support. / Shounen: But, there's no saying when that support will arrive. / [[Fumio stands and points at Maru accusingly.]] / Fumio: So here you are, offering us a delicious meal to bribe us into helping you stall the Wataro army until the cavalry arrives! / Maru: Uh, sure. Shounen, go grab some food and drink. / Ina: I hate to admit it, but we have to stop that army, even if it delays rescuing my father. / Yorikiro: Hmm, what do you think, Cho? / Cho: We go where the Tao needs us most. / [[Yorikiro stands and thumps the table.]] / Yorikiro: Alright, Maru, / Yorikiro: You've got yourself an army! / [[Fumio and Fujio are helping themselves to the food. Ken is drinking alcohol as fast as he can. All three give the "thumbs up" sign.]] / Yorikiro: Right, guys?

No Need for Bushido! Page #345 [[Fumio, Fujio, Ken, Yorikiro, Maru, Cho, and Ina walk down a street in the village.]] / Maru: So counting myself, my two guardsmen, / Maru: And your four guys, that brings us to seven samurai. / Yorikiro: Ooh, seven! My lucky number. / Fumio: But we're not samurai... / Fujio: Uh, what my friend here is saying is that we could both easily count as two samurai each! / [[Maru points at Cho.]] / Maru: We also have about fifty farmers, and a what-ever-you-are. / Cho: Taoist priest. / [[Maru turns to Cho.]] / Maru: Can you fight at least as well as that kid over there? / Cho: Oh, yes, way better.
No Need for Bushido! Page #346 [[Ina, Maru, Cho and Yorikiro walk down a street.]] / Maru: Excellent. Now all we have left to do is hold back those Wataro scum until our reinforcements arrive. / Ina: Wait, shouldn't we have some sort of plan in place before they get here? / [[Maru scowls.]] / Maru: Weren't you listening, woman? I just told you the plan! / Ina: I mean something a little more specific and less doomed for failure. / [[A stick lays on the ground before Cho.]] / [[Cho picks up the stick.]] / [[Cho raises the stick.]] / Cho: Worry not, friends! / Cho: The Tao will once again provide its guidance!
No Need for Bushido! Page #347 [[Fujio, Fumio, Ina, Maru, Yorikiro and Ken gather around Cho. Cho is drawing plans in the dirt with a stick.]] / Cho: Given the village's location and nearby natural barriers, / Cho: I believe we would be best to imitate the otter, which lays its eggs far from the pointy fangs of the hungry mallard. / <> / [[Fujio, Fumio, Ina and Maru watch Cho draw in the dirt.]] / Cho: Primary defenses should be here and here. / Cho: And fall back positions can be placed between this snowman and the lamppost. / <> / <> / <> / Fumio: Huh, it looks like some sort of... / Fujio: Winged fish? / Fumio: Yeah, that's what I was thinking. / Ina: Maybe I should draw out the battle plans from now on.
No Need for Bushido! Page #348 [[Yukizane, on horseback, leads an army. He is flanked by two officers, also on horseback.]] / Narrator: 8 years ago / Narrator: Yukizane returns to Senshin castle after a successful military campaign. / [[Yukizane stands before Masuhiro and Kagome.]] / Kagome: You did what!? / Yukizane: I challenged the enemy general to a game of Chinese chess instead of a direct battle. / Masuhiro: You did this even though you had the overwhelming advantage in numbers? / Yukizane: Which I used as leverage to convince him to accept my terms, besides I... / {Someone speaks from off panel.}} / Voice: Uncle Yuki!
No Need for Bushido! Page #349 [[A young Ina hugs Yukizane.]] / <> / Ina: Uncle Yuki, Uncle Yuki!, I missed you! / Yukizane: My, have I been gone that long? / Ina: Only forever! Can we play one of your board games? / [[Yukizane crouches down.]] / Yukizane: Oh? you couldn't find anyone to play against? / Ina: No one here wants to play except Dad, and he's not very good. / [[Ina whispers to Yukizane.]] / Ina: He always falls for the same tricks.

No Need for Bushido! Page #350 {{A flashback.}} / [[Yukizane and Ina are playing Go in a garden.]] / Yukizane: You're doing very well, Ina! / Yukizane: Just don't forget to hold a solid front, or your enemy might sneak in. / [[Ina sets down a game piece.]] / <> / Ina: Unless, of course, it's a trap. / [[Ina looks up a Yukizane.]] / Ina: Gotcha! / {{The present day.}} / [[Shonen gives a map to Ina.]] / Shonen: I brought the map of our farmlands you requested. / [[The map is brown ink on parchment.]] / {{Ina speaks from off panel.}} / Ina: Well boys, / [[Yorikiro, Ina and Maru look at the map.]] / Ina: I think we have ourselves a plan.
No Need for Bushido! Page #351 [[Ina rests her hand on the map.]] / Ina: We still have a couple days to prepare. If we use every advantage at our disposal, we may just hold out until help arrives. / Fumio: Yeah... what sort of advantage could we possibly have? / Ina: Plenty! / [[General Atsumori, on horseback, leads his troops.]] / {{Ina narrates from off panel.}} / Ina: If General Atsumori thought he'd have to fight for this village, he wouldn't have sent a message. / Ina: He's not expecting to meet any resistance worth committing a large number of troops. / Ina: Our counter attack will be a surprise. / [[Yorikiro, Maru and Ina stand on a bluff. Ina points.]] / {{Ina narrates from off panel.}} / Ina: Who knows this land better than the farmers that have lived off it for generations? / Ina: Before the enemy even gets here, we will know where to run, / Ina: where to hold, / Ina: and where to attack. / [[Ken inspects the farmers who will be fighting.]] / {{Ina narrates from off panel.}} / Ina: We may be outnumbered and outclassed, but we only need to defend and delay. / Ina: To win, our opponent will have to take an aggressivve stance, and that's where the greatest mistakes are made. / Ina: That's how we'll trap him.
No Need for Bushido! Webcomic updates Mondays! [[Ken is training eight villagers. Maru, Ina and Yorikiro watch.]] / Ina: Wow, Ken's actually doing a really good job. / Yorikiro: The death threats were particularly inspirational. / Ken: You call that fighting? I've seen moss more threatening than you! / Ken: And swear more, damn it! The best offense is a good oh-ffense. / [[Shonen has a black eye. He talks to Ina.]] / Shounen: Lady Senshin, Mr. Daisuke reports that "this lousy sack of potatoes has a good chance of not totally dying instantly." / Shounen: Also, the fortifications you requested are complete, / Shounen: and everyone unable to fight has been told to prepare to evacuate by tomorrow. / Ina: Great work, Shounen! / Ina: Now we just need to find some actual equipment for our new army. / Maru: Now that won't be a problem. / {{Ken speaks from off panel.}} / Ken: You in the back. You're not kickin' enough ass!
No Need for Bushido! Webcomic updates Mondays! [[Maru, Ina and Yorikiro approach an armory.]] / [[Maru shows Ina and Yorikiro a storeroom full of armor and weapons.]] / Maru: Badass, isn't it? / Ina: This'll be more than enough to arm the entire village! Where did you get it all? / Maru: Oh just a few spoils from my many amazing victories. / [[Ina holds a helmet.]] / Ina: This armor looks like it hadn't even been used in 30 years! / Maru: Well, some of my victories were a little more hand-me-down than others.

The villagers not able to fight are leaving.]] / {{Ina narrates her writing.}} / Ina: I'm staying to fight as best as I can. / Ina: I'm going to repent for my decision to run away... / Ina: A decision that caused this battle in the first place. / [[Yorikiro demonstrates using a spear to the new soldiers.]] / {{Ina narrates her writing.}} / Ina: I'm sorry I made you worry, but I don't want you to worry any more. / Ina: There are people here who will protect me... / [[Yorikiro smiles.]] / {{Ina narrates her writing.}} / Ina: and I believe in them.
