Blue Crash Kit-- Webcomic of champions. We love you more than cheese! This week's Friday Extra -- All About Sarah
Doctor Sarah M'Bonoto has turned into one of the most popular characters in the strip. Gee-- I wonder why...
Sarah first appeared standing in line behind Seth at Bestwaymart in the January 6, 2005 strip, but did not return or get a speaking role until February 8th, when she and Seth moved in next door to our heroes.
With Sarah and Seth, we wanted an incongruous mix -- the nerdy, snarky inventor type with the totally hot bombshell babe. You know those couples you look at and say to yourself, "How did a geek like that end up with such a total hottie?" That was the idea here.
To complete the effect, of course, we wanted to give her not just beauty, but brains, as well. (While a great face and body are nice, as Cat says, "Sexy is between the ears.")
Of course, as much as we studiously avoid anything to do with realism here (Come on-- this is a comic about talking anthropomorphic animal superheroes who fight giant zombie turkeys -- If you expect realism here you're definitely at the wrong drive-through), I am somewhat obsessive about internal consistency, so I can't write in a character without giving her some backstory.
And now you get to read Sarah's backstory. Isn't this kind of like being cornered at a convention and forced to listen to some unshowered guy who lives in his mother's basement talk about his 47th level vampiric plumber who also happens to be half-dragon and own his own galaxy?
Sarah had a love-hate relationship with her looks growing up. She loved looking good, but hated that most people couldn't seem to see past her appearance. She developed her intellect partly as a way to prove there was more to her than people assumed.
This didn't prevent her from taking advantage of her looks, however. She actually worked her way through med school as a swimsuit model, and learned to enjoy putting the men and women who made assumptions about her in their places.
Having grown up with four brothers, Sarah had been something of a tomboy. She learned to hunt (but didn't like it), fish, and hold her own in rough-housing at an early age. This upbringing helped when she discovered martial arts in her freshman year at university.
Most of those who had been initially interested in Sarah ended up getting scared off. They weren't expecting brains and the ability to kick their asses to be wrapped up in a package like this.
When Sarah and Seth became neighbors, Sarah finally met someone more interested in her intellect than her cleavage, and who wasn't threatened by her. The two shared many late-night conversations about literature, cinema, science, politics, and philosophy.
When they thought there were about to die during the Turkzilla attack, both confessed to deeper feelings and moved in together before Seth had even recovered from his turkey-inflicted injuries.
