'He'd always rather die than do something he absolutely hated. But he'd rather do something he hated than let someone else die...

'That's why I ended up starting the war; so he had to stay alive to save me.'

'Was it really as simple as that?' I asked.

'Of course!' the king of demons said. 'Come on, let's see my final plan in action. It's going to be /awesome/.'
'The war started because of one person,' she said. 'But now that person is dying.

'So there is no longer any need for a war.'

And, under the shadow of the white tower, we did indeed find someone who seemed to no longer have any need for a war.

'He seems to be a very peaceful person,' I said. 'Did he really start this war?'

'Of course not,' a strange voice answered. 'Venice! Start a war! He'd rather die.
As we traveled closer to the white tower, it became apparent that others were leaving it.

I asked the red rider why this was happening.

The spaces between words are sometimes as important as the words.

Sometimes no matter what, a conversation will end, and perhaps there is nothing more one can do about it.

But perhaps somewhere, not too far away, someone else is waiting,

and you only have to travel the length of that space to find the answer.
'His box doesn't yet realize that it is empty,' the rider said. 'What a fool.'

For the first time, I notice a small crack in the lid of her box. As if something has managed to pierce it.

'Isn't there anything I can do?' I asked.

'He asked to be left alone when this happened,' she said. 'He does not wish to be saved.'

'Where is his box?'

'He said specifically to tell you to forget it,' she said. 'Anyway he doesn't believe he's worth saving.'

'What do you believe?' I asked.

The crack in the box that had become the red rider's heart grew slightly bigger,

and I decided to believe that this meant she, too, wished to save Valentine.

'What happens when you put someone else's heart in your box?' I ask her.

'Oh,' I said.
I didn't feel that was enough to say. But it felt like nothing I could say would ever have been enough, or appropriate.

Not even 'I wish he had told me,' or 'Well then, that's very good of him to stop doing it.'

'You aren't angry,' the rider observed.
'Would it help?'

'Not really,' the rider said.

And we regarded Valentine for a while more together.

'One day the heart grows completely hollow and disappears entirely.

'I was angry when I first realized this. But hearts follow the shape of their surroundings. An iron box is strong, and cold, and hollow... I have accepted this.'

'And is this your heart?' I asked.

'This isn't my heart any more,' the rider said. 'My heart has become the box. But it doesn't know. As long as there is a human heart in there, it believes it is still a heart.'

'But the last time I saw Valentine, he was announcing that he would not steal hearts from people to keep his box alive any more.'
'Did something happen to Valentine's heart?'

'It happened a long time ago,' the red rider says. 'He did it himself. If you were afraid of being hurt by anything, you could put your heart in a box...

'There nothing can pierce your heart, and nothing can hurt you any more.'

But then no warmth can ever reach one's heart either, I thought.

And I asked, aloud: 'What happens to a heart, inside the box?'

'Inside the box?' the rider said. 'The heart is lonely, and grows hollow.'

'What makes you think he even has one?' came the reply.

'I think everyone has a heart,' I said. 'Some people just forget they have one. It doesn't make them any less deserving of it...

For example, in this memory, I had just dragged my friend out of the sea and was trying to listen to his heartbeat, which so far could not yet be heard.

At this point a suspicious shadow fell over us. Of course I wondered if these two incidents were connected...

The clouds that day were so white, I couldn't quite see what it was hovering overhead at first. But I asked, anyway:

'Are you here to wind up Valentine's heart? How did you know it stopped?'
