[[Dasiuke Kirisame and Keine are standing around in the Human Village when a wide-eyed Sanae shows up.]]
Daisuke: So then I ... hmm? Oh, hello, Sanae.
Keine: Ah, hi, Sanae. Did something happen?
Sanae: Hi, Keine ... hi, Mr. Kirisame ... Yeah, it was the weirdest thing, even by the standards of Gensokyo!

[[A thought-cloud with Koishi appears above Sanae's head. Daisuke and Keine turn to face Sanae, looking concerned.]]
Daisuke: What? What happened?
Keine: Uh-oh.
Sanae: Yeah ... I saw this youkai girl who looked like a satori with her Third Eye shut! She was acting really weird, like her mind was completely blank ...

Sanae: And the instant she left my field of vision, I FORGOT THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE!
[[Daisuke and Keine react in shock.]]
Daisuke: Gasp!
Keine: Gasp!

[[Cut to the Hieda Household; Marisa and Aya are crowded cheerfully around Akyuu, who is writing in a book.]]
Akyuu: (grinning incredulously at Marisa) Waaaaaait, what!?
Aya: That's a great idea, Marisa!
Marisa: (goofy grin) This is gonna be the best Gensokyo Chronicle ever!!

{{Characters: Keine Kamishirasawa, Sanae Kochiya, Daisuke Kirisame, Koishi Komeiji, Hieda no Akyuu, Marisa Kirisame, Aya Shameimaru

I'm still on my Indefinite Hiatus (or possibly Hiedas), and the reasons for remaining on it are still in place (even apart from Villainmad and Cottagesnagged, I'm still feeling generally unmotivated and discouraged and depressed about my Touhou creations). However, I thought that now would be a good time to make something about the recently-released Symposium of Post-Mysticism. This entire idea struck me while I was reading a thread on "how Symposium derped with your views of Gensokyo" on Maidens of the Kaleidoscope, and I started really thinking about the fact that Akyuu supposedly wrote this down herself.

So, Koishi is apparently sort of like an imaginary friend and adults forget her the minute they stop seeing her.(This did not help the aforementioned unmotivation/discouragement/depression, and neither did murderously-psychotic Kisume for some reason. Although depression tends to cause confusion about whether you're depressed because of X, or you were already depressed when X crossed your mind ...) While I don't begrudge anyone depicting Koishi as Tyler Durden or Pooh or whatever, since these ideas are all awesome, well ... How do you find out about someone whose defining characteristics supposedly include "people forget about her the minute she leaves their field of vision," let alone compile an informative article about her? Unless, of course, said characteristics were pulled out of Marisa's ass. Wait, that came out wrong. Not to mention the varopis other parts of these in-character profiles which appear to contradict the contents of the official out-of-character profiles that came with the games themselves ... It's like this information, which comes from questionable in-universe sources which are nevertheless just reliable enough that you can't discount them outright, were designed specifically to be equal parts interesting and uncertain!

Actually, I think the uncertainty is a fairly brilliant move on ZUN's part. Touhou's popularity is fuelled almost entirely by the fan-creations; the not-quite-set-in-stone nature of the source-material provides a bit more fodder for Gensokyos which aren't quite the same as ZUN's, and while a lack thereof has never stopped anyone in any other fandom, this might push people in a particular direction if they'd just been on the edge. Meanwhile, the sticklers-for-canon, who like nothing more than to bicker about it, get the added bonus of bickering about which parts of canon are accurate. Finally, ZUN himself gets to flex his creative muscles, without necessarily leaving himself beholden to any part of it if he changes his mind about anything at a later date. The only people left unsatisfied are the ones who want A Clear And Definite Answer; which is unfortunate, because clear and definite answers are not how ZUN rolls, and never has been.

Oh, look, the commentary's basically longer than the 4koma-comic itself again.}}

Sara: Sigh ....
Luize: Sara? Are you all right?
Sara: (sitting up slightly) Oh, hi, Luize ... I dunno, I've kinda been feeling down in the dumps lately.

[[Sara sits up.]]
Sara: (getting off the couch) It's just ... I've really been feeling kind of aimless lately. I guarded the gateway to Makai for a few hundred years, but now ...
Luize: ... Now gateways to other realities are forbidden in general, yeah.
Sara: I feel like I've been *between* work for the past ten years.

Luize: (frowning) This isn't some kind of clinical depression, is it?
Sara: (smiling) Huh? Ah, no, no, it's not like that. I'm *functional* and all, I just feel like I don't have anything to *do*.

[[Luize starts pulling Sara away by her collar.]]
Luize: WELL THEN COME ON!
Sara: Gwack!?
[[With Sara released, Luize hovers as they head away from the couch.]]
Luize: C'mon! Let's head to a restaurant in Romantic City! Or find what Yuki and Mai are doing! Or find some abandoned ruins and explore for all I care!
Sara: (grinning uncontrollably) Hee hee ...

[[Luize lands and gestures expansively.]]
Luize: Who cares about some mean ol' human's decree!? Who cares about that ship that came to Hokkai last year from Gensokyo!? Who --
Sara: (suddenly annoyed) Wait, what?

[[Sara glares darkly.]]
Luize: Huh? Uh ... I heard this rumor about a flying ship that appeared in hokkai, and, uh ... it came from a gateway to Gensokyo ...
Sara: .....

[[In Pandemonium, Sara angrily advances on a confused-looking Shinki, with Luize right behind her.]]
Sara: MOTHERRRRR!!
Luize: (aside) No seriously it wasn't her fault
{{Characters: Sara, Luize, Shinki
I'm starting to get terrible about making and finishing new comics here. I'm obviously entering that phase webcomic-creators get into where they start updating less and less and then eventually abruptly stop.(For instance, Megatokyo has been in this phase for most of its run, whereas Irregular Webcomic ran almost continuously every day for nearly nine years and has technically ended without slowing down its output.) Who knows how far it'll go before I'm forced to work on Create.swf Adventures again.
Anyway! We get to see some of what the Mystic Square cast has been doing since Mystic Square. And how they reacted to Undefined Fantastic Object. The purpose of Luize in this comic was to determine how many different facial expressions I could use with closed eyes, and still have her effectively expressing emotions.
Romantic City is the location of Mystic Square's third stage. I base this on all the signs that said "Romantic" that were scattered around. I mean, there aren't actually any buildings in the game itself, there's just this semi-lengthy red brick road that zigzagged around with the occasional sign that said "Romantic" for no apparent reason; I just thought that Romantic City sounded like a better name (and location, for that matter) than something like Romantic Way, which might also have connotations which I didn't actually intend this time.
As you can probably tell, I had a bit of trouble coming up with the punchline, since my ideas.txt only mentioned the premise, which was that Sara was feeling depressed about the lack of gateways to other realms, and I didn't think it through any further than that.(This is a common problem with my ideas-file; they include a basic premise, and leave it at that without any thought going into "And then what happens?" until I'm actually working on the comic.)
I have added makai-bg2a.png and makai-bg3.png to the assets list. Usual "I'd like it if you gave me credit" applies. Sara's tugged-collar-thing in panel 5 is just part of Ellen's outfit cropped and with the red part recolored, and also a poorly-drawn bit of cloth which is mostly obscured by Sara's hair, so yeah.}}

[[Reimu and Sanae are hanging around in a field when Marisa flies over on her broom.]]
Reimu: Okay, is that some kind of outside-world thing ...?
Sanae: Don't worry, it's not *that* important to the story. Anyway, then I told Mumei ...
Marisa: HI

[[Reimu turns to Marisa in annoyance. Sanae is somewhat taken aback.]]
Reimu: Do I interrupt your dates with Alice?
Marisa: (sweatdrop) Whoops, aheh, okay, I'll be goin' now!
Sanae: Uh ... yeah ... Weren't you gonna be on your computer all day?

[[Marisa prepares to take off, while Reimu gets an annoyed pouty look.]]
Marisa: Oh, nah, I actually got tired of piratin' movies and music and games an' stuff.
Sanae: Oh, pretending to go on the straight and narrow? Or were you actually going to start watching and listening to them all?
Reimu's Thoughts: Don't laugh don't laugh don't laugh ...

[[Marisa is now hovering.]]
Reimu: (grinning uncontrollably) GO HOME!
Delays were caused by much the same thing as they were last tme. So anyway, in this comic, Marisa weighs in on a controversial topic in the Outside World! To wit: this kind of thing is basically the entire reason why those "YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A CAR, WOULD YOU!?" messages are useless and stupid. Also, I thought I should actually remember that Reimu and Sanae are dating each other this time.
I didn't really have anything in mind for the story Sanae was telling Reimu, apart from the fact that she's referencing Daily Flash characters. Just, y'know, filler to show that they exist outside of reacting to Marisa barging in. I also pondered giving them both "civilian attire" (seeing as how neither of them is actually operating as a shrine maiden at the moment), but I figured, y'know, 1. it'd be funnier to have them in their full uniforms, and 2. anything else would be, y'know, work.
Marisa's "HI" in the first panel is inspired by one of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 riffs of The Brain Head That Wouldn't Die; I'm not entirely convinced I could explain this in a way that would really do it justice, so, uh, all I can recommend is that you should watch it yourself. I couldn't find it when I looked it up on Youtube. I don't even know why I brought it up here in the first place! ARRGHHH!}}

I also pondered giving them both "civilian attire" (seeing as how neither of them is actually operating as a shrine maiden at the moment), but I figured, y'know, 1. it'd be funnier to have them in their full uniforms, and 2. anything else would be, y'know, work.
Marisa's "HI" in the first panel is inspired by one of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 riffs of The Brain Head That Wouldn't Die; I'm not entirely convinced I could explain this in a way that would really do it justice, so, uh, all I can recommend is that you should watch it yourself. I couldn't find it when I looked it up on Youtube. I don't even know why I brought it up here in the first place! ARRGHHH!}}

[[Youmu and Yuyuko are standing in Hakugyokurou's courtyard, holding training swords; Yuyuko is wearing a tennis outfit.]]
Youmu: Lady Yuyuko ... *please* try to take this more seriously!
Yuyuko: Oh, Youmu, you shouldn't worry so much!

Youmu: (angrily) Shouldn't worry so much!? You're wearing that ridiculous ... er ... well, fairly plain outfit Yukari got you, and you're still not holding your training-sword properly!
Yuyuko: (peering at her sword) Not holding it properly? Hmm, let's see ...
Yuyuko: So?
Youmu: My family has served you for nearly a thousand years!! How could you not have learned even the most basic ...

[[Yuyuko gestures with her sword, both hands outstretched.]]
Many many apologies for the delays; I am hereby invoking the "whenever I feel like it" clause which, uh, I'm pretty sure I mentioned on the comic's main page a while ago. But the point is that, as I said in that blog post, I really did not feel like it until now. (I actually made bits and pieces of it over the course of several weeks.(I also made a program in C# which had the specific intentions of making it easier to switch between save-files in Create.swf as well as take pictures from it. I am not going to release it yet, however, because it is half-finished at best, and requires that I go in and manually edit most of the settings.))
So, this idea came from the Touhou thread on the TVTropes forum, which got it from the more-or-less direct quote from Youmu's Perfect Memento article in panel 1. And that's really all there is to say on the matter. Yuyuko's clothes are simply the "Tennis Outfit" which is ... somewhere down there in the list of Bodies.
I played through Ten Desires as Youmu, entirely so I could see what she looked like from behind for the purpose of creating panel 10. It was simpler than I feared, and thus it was a lot more straightforward than it might have been. Mind you, Youmu is wearing swords on her back in 10D, but in this comic, she's in training-mode instead of Incident-mode.
Here is a version of the training-swords depicted in this comic; here is the version that was actually used. As usual, I'd prefer some kind of credit if you use it.
I considered having Yuyuko specifically say "Hooray, I win!" in the last panel, but then I thought "y'know, just like in the entirety of the Fairy Wars storyline," and decided that having her just say "Hooray!" was even sillier. Bah, I'm still not feeling 100%, idk.}}

[[Marisa, Alice, Old Reimu, and Satsuki Hakurei are hanging out in a field at sunset with sakura trees in the background.]]
Old Reimu: Well, the Flower Viewing of 179 was another nice one, but it's getting to be time for us to head back to the Shrine.
Marisa: Yeah, same here, pretty much.
[[Cirno flies over, looking older and with long sleeves and an orange scarf.]]
Old Reimu: Well, well, well! I was wondering if you'd come. Here for another one of our duels, are you?
{{Characters: Old Reimu, Marisa Kirisame, Alice Margatroid, Satsuki Hakurei, Cirno-nee
And so the Fairy War, which began over there, took 60 years to actually finish. And I also finished it on my 26th birthday. And nobody noticed in advance what number this was going to be! I, uh, just had a terrible time coming up with a good parody-name for Heir to the Empire.
So ... I admit the emphasis here is more on Phantasmagoria of Flower View than on Fairy Wars for the most part. This setup has always been how this story arc was going to end, though. I tried to come up with a punnish surname based on "Cirno-nee" (the meme is basically "Cirno-nee = older, mature Cirno," and that's pretty much all there is to it), but since "-nee" is a suffix and surnames come first in Japanese, it really wouldn't work. Anyway, here is her DNA: 3.39:Cirno-nee:100:117:232:271:126:9:0:54:0:116:77:49CAE9
That "looking in each other's eye to see who'd win" thing is actually a reference to Rurouni Kenshin; my original idea for the reference was for it to be Reimu, but since I'm trying to make something which is at least related to Fairy Wars, I went with Marisa, who I figured would work pretty much just as well, and from which the punchline easily follows.
Someday I'm gonna make a better version of Cirno's ice-angel-wings so they actually look like, y'know, actual wings.}}

Someday I'm gonna make a better version of Cirno's ice-angel-wings so they actually look like, y'know, actual wings.}}

Text: CIRNO: BRIMMING WITH CHILL VS MARISA KIRISAME: THE WITCH PASSING BY

{{Characters: Cirno, Marisa Kirisame
The fairy war, which began here, has now spilled over onto humans. I am using the titles from the Thrawn trilogy out of order. We wil perhaps run into a much more perilous human next week! Also, the opening crawl again! Also-also, I apologize for not having something prepared for September 9 (i.e. ⑨/⑨), but I really don't pay any attention to dates.(KirbyM's birthday notwithstanding.) Yes, I am American, so whatever. Also, I have managed to sneak in a few more seventeens, mostly in the "number of words and/or letters" department!
Upholding my promise of not derailing the game's storyline with any of my OCs, I am instead derailing the game's storyline with my shipping. The only reason you should be surprised by this is if you weren't paying attention to the appearance of her wings, the timeline, or discussions about the chronology in the comments.(Fairy Wars canonically takes place in spring of 2008, which is about the same time as the first few comics. Yes, I'm aware that I put Scarlet Weather Rhapsody at the wrong chronological point. I'm tired of doing more retcons to the damn thing, especially given the number of things I've done which sort of assume that SWR has already happened by that time, and nothing about SWR itself particularly requires that Subterranean Animism has already happened.) Regardless, it manages to be closer to what was actually in the game itself than the entire storyline up to now.
I figure Marisa is genre-savvy enough to stop a "Who's On First"/"Batman's a scientist" routine when she sees it coming. The "Did you eats something weird?" "I DID!!" is pretty much taken directly from the game's dialogue.
The thing about Marisa is, compared to fairies, she's pretty much Darth Vader and the Death Star. The game "scales up" the amount of danmaku because the main character is a fairy ? there's not really that many bullets, ZUN just programmed in that many to make it easier to use the "freeze bullets" mechanic ? and on that scale, stage-4-boss Marisa is an Extra Boss. And we all remember what happened the first time they met.
Hmm. I'm mildly concerned that the joke in Cirno's line in the last panel might be a bit too meta and/or obscure. Ah well, see you next week.}}

Hmm. I'm mildly concerned that the joke in Cirno's line in the last panel might be a bit too meta and/or obscure. Ah well, see you next week.}}

Much to apologizeding for the delay! Fairy Wars begins here, and is still not doing any actual Star Wars stuff besides "oh, hey, she said that thing the one guy said that one time!" and stuff. But it's not over yet, I still have to do Extra! I guess I'll have to start borrowing titles from the Thrawn trilogy. This is also comic #150, a number of no significance whatsoever. (Also I've stopped really trying to shoehorn seventeens in ... except, y'know, the titles.)
I've used the "Ready to lose?" "No, ready to win!" bit a couple of times now. I suppose it doesn't have to be that much of a "catchphrase" or whatever; it just seems like it's the kind of thing that these belligerent Touhous would say.
"Shoosh" and "pap" are sound effects from Homestuck, for those few of you who don't actually know this. They are almost universally paired with each other, both by the fans and in canon. "Doof" also appears, albeit more rarely.
I figured Cirno should actually have some sort of challenge at some point (prior to the extra stage, which is supposed to beat you over the head with its difficulty). However, I could not bring myself to have her actually succeed entirely on her own merits. This was just meant to be silliness and chaos from beginning to end, really!
In the Fairy Wars music-room and level-announcement, the final boss theme is displayed as "Faily Wars." This speaks for itself.
I couldn't decide which face Remilia should use in the last panel, so of course the answer is always "all four of them, by way of random comic-generation!" (I'd originally planned on including Trollface as a fifth one, but I basically just could not get it to look good. And it was originally just going to be Light Yagami and Awesome Face, but I decided to throw in the other two for good measure.)}}

I decided that out of the three fairies (and, indeed, out of the rest of the cast), Sunny Milk should be the one to directly match Cirno's "enthusiasm." I quickly realized that this would also result in ... escalation.
Cirno: Hah! Attack me from behind, will you!?
SFX: <<swordflail!>>
Star Sapphire: What? You turned away from me on your own!
Star Sapphire: Ow!!
And I'm starting to get "length-creep," I mean this one's eleven panels long! Who knows, by the time I'm done, there might be, y'know ... seventeen panels!! Also, I am no longer doing the Star Wars titles in order.
This is the part where I start to worry that I've raised the bar too high for myself in terms of out-and-out silliness. I mean, yeah, I've got plenty of material, but especially compared to the inspired lunacy of last week, I'm having trouble living up to it, and I'm just feeling kinda pressured now. Probably not a problem, though ...
Cirno's line in panel 6, "WHOOP, WAUGH!", is a reference to Calvin and Hobbes; on at least one occasion, Calvin has exclaimed this in reaction to one of his zany actions going awry. I forget when this actually was.
The "outstretched hands" object in panel 3 is actually in front of the object for the piece of paper.}}
